It is interesting to see where we've all ended up, but attempting to observe myself writing this, I think I say this every time I make a random annual visit... and as years have passed since I felt Battle.net "died," it's nice to know how things are going with some of the people I used to talk to. After all, we are all humans!
I'm playing World of WarCraft, or as you called it, "Battle.net v2". :)
As some point in time people are reminded by what once was. Then it crosses their minds for a second for a minute for a few hours depending on the amount of impact it has caused. I still idle my bots on battle.net for no purpose except to idle. So sometimes when i come home every few weeks or so i check on bnet and then i might talk to someone or leave someone a random botmail but its still a bit weird when someone messages me on an instant messenger asking me if battle.net is still alive.
People grow up and move onto other things that are of interest to them. I can say for myself battle.net was a fun place to play with. As well as the games were fun to corrupt. I can say without question battle.net isn't the same anymore even if a lot of people come back it still won't seem the same.
Although i do look forward to people coming back when diablo 3 and starcraft 2 are released. Most people though have lost their old names which sucks but names don't matter its the person behind them.
Even though people may come back to for those two games, I doubt it will be for long and it will probably be just for the sake of playing the game for a short period of time just for the sake of playing it. Battle.net's just been something that's been "used up", for lack of a better phrase. It's still alive somewhat, there's still people on here writing code for it. I keep up with their progress now and then -- it's fun to see where things are going.
This thread is so nostalgic, it makes me want to download some bots again. Well, not really, bnet has sucked for a pretty long time...
Can't wait for d3 and sc2, though. Maybe bnet will have something of a renaissance then. For now I wish I could play some WoW but I'm stuck on dial-up in Australia until the 22nd. Oh well...
Blizzard mentioned that they are going to re-work battle.net for the new games. This might be a good thing or not.
How can it not be a good thing? Battle.net is nice in the sense of memories as many people have more or less brought up but as for its actual architecture and design well... it definitly competed with AOL 3.0 back in the day.. lols
The most obvious solutions seem to make all legacy battle.net games (those that have came out up until now) to be decentralized like they did with Diablo and public rooms, or to tag all names like they did with Warcraft3, which would certainly prove a lame solution if they hope to utilize battle.net for both D3 and SC2. I dont they'll repeat the cheap fixes of the past, but given you can't change the old CD key system, they limit how nice they can be to the old games once those come out.
I heard from an inside source that it's still being debated whether or not sc2/d3 are going to be on the same network as the others. i hope that's just them trying to confuse people though ;p

I doubt when they say they're going to be making an "improved" Battle.net, they're talking about the protocol. Nearly all users will only ever see end interface/features, which is what they'll be focusing on. Voice chat, new commands and buttons, maybe some features bots have implemented already?

Voice Chat would probably be as limited as it is on WoW. Moderators would be able to mute people, and only like three people could speak at once or something.

I honestly doubt much will change, sure some matchmaking to keep the masses quiet but overall it will be largely the same protocol wise.
Still, it may spark life back into Battle.net which is always a good thing. If I'm not completely sucked into WoTLK then I'll give SC2 a go.

Of course it'll happen. They'll both be used on Battle.net, making it possible. Blizzard has already said Chat Bots are legal, yet unsupported, so there's nothing stopping you.

I was thinking of making a small daemon that handles connections like BNLS. I wouldn't want to spend much time on it so I'd probably have the daemon use BNCSUtil and Andy's Warden library to handle peoples warden requests. Only issue would be that people would have to keep the connection to the BNLS server to send/receive the handled warden responses.

I was thinking of making a small daemon that handles connections like BNLS. True, however they know people have emulated the game to login. In fact, Mike Morhaime suggested people helping in then Open Tech Channel to move from CHAT to D1 or another CDKey-less client. Anyway, they have stated that as long as you don't violate the ToU by spamming, harassing others, etc, etc, you will be fine.

That being said, the WoW forums will require a Blizzard account. The current account also allows you to register the different Battle.net games, so Battle.net 2.0 and the new Battle.net Forums will probably require a Blizzard Account as well. All of that being said, I believe it should just be on large forum since they both require a Blizzard Account. The account will probably be linked to everything Blizzard, hence the name Blizzard Account instead of Bnet account, etc, etc.
They've already started selling authenticators that act somewhat like that. They currently just have a security token that you can link to your WoW account. While all of this has happened, it's still all speculation...

It doesn't have to be... I used the same account for WotLK that I did for my Blizzard "Store" Account that has all of my Battle.net games on it already.

Correct. My point was, though, that the current WotLK account can be transitive. I made my WotLK account first; my Blizz Store account is the same email address but is physically different. I'm not sure why they did it, but it seems to me like they don't intend to keep those as requirements moving forward. Otherwise they would have been enforced.

What do you mean, Mynd? The Blizzard Store account is what's used on WotLK, =O. I used my original account (that I created the day the store opened) and it worked without any issues. So, it's all the same.

I did not have a Store account when I registered for WotLK. I thought they were the same until I tried to order my Blizzcon tickets, at which point I found out that I also had to create a Store account. They are the same email address, but different passwords. They're different accounts. They can be the same, but they don't HAVE to be.

Battle.Net had its time, which came and went. Things change, people change. Those were good times, but they are over for me. I think even when Starcraft 2 comes out, I will not be doing the same things on battle.net as before. I really doubt most of Valhalla Legends cares much for that scene (in its previous incarnation of attitude) any more, or will again in the future. Everyone has new interests and finds their challenges in different things.
Of course, I could just be speaking for myself.

Ohs and yeah I don't see historic battle.net attitude ever coming back amongst us... but I will buy Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2 so if they base it over battle.net I will be back on... there will probably be another channel and all but wouldn't expect it to be like old days. There is a decent amount of us planning to start playing those games again though! I think I will be out of the country once Diablo 3 comes out but will probably play it when I get back.
well i guess that just shows it'll be on battle.net I wonder how the new or clan channels will work..
