I'm being syn flooded. Or at least some form of a lame DDoS. Because my router log is filling up with 'ICMP Packet Dropped' 'UDP Packet Dropped' 'Possible Port Scan' etc.

I've only (from my experiences) seen a SYN flood occur with TCP/IP packets

ICMP packets indicate a Ping Flood or possible a Ping of Death attack.

Turns out it wasn't as bad as I thought. Probably due to the CS server.

Oh well. Hopefully whatever is trying to get in will stop.

In relation to UDP based games, ICMP can have two natural causes:

* An outside user is sending an udp packet to check status of Newby's CS server, but CS isn't running, and Newby's computer responds with an ICMP port unreachable.

* An outside user is sending an udp packet to check status of Newby's CS server, but doesn't keep listening open long enough to receive the response. Their computer responds with an ICMP port unreachable to Newby's CS server.

Okay, I was installing slackware on my laptop so I burned it onto a cd. It failed burning. I'm like okay. I try again. Failed again. I redownload both cds, and try again. Failed again. I download the cds from a different server it burns successfully or so it said... I data test it. Failed. Burn it again, this time it successfully passes everything. I go to install it. The installation fails, it says it can't extract the files from the cd. I burn it again, failed again. Turns out after I made the linux partition I forgot to format it... 12 cds later...

SYN floods can only occur on a TCP connection, by definition.  UDP and IP and everything else has no concept of a SYN packet.

The thing is, that the UDP/ICMP packets being sent were on ports un-related to the CS server (which was running, but apparently my router stopped forwarding the port to my server) so it concerned me.

I drop all ICMP packets to my router as well. Well, most.

My "how was it response" at madz took me about an hour and a half to write and it's extremely long. I'll refrain from posting it here. I'll upload the pictures tommorow (only got 105, but probably won't put ones of sister and such up) though so you guys can see those even though most of them aren't anything special that you can't find on google.

I'm using a Microsoft MN-520 wireless pcmcia card in my laptop and it works great.  Generally you can do a google search for the card and it'll find you something.  If not, try posting at www.linuxquestions.org in their laptop section.
