I am joining the army (the Israel Defense Forces) on Sunday, December 19, 2004 at 07:30 A.M. Israel time. So I wrote this mini-FAQ.
Mini-FAQQ:
Why?!?!?!A: Israel has a draft. Everyone joins the army except people who have certain valid excuses, which I don't. Israel is a very militaristic country, and if you don't serve in the army, society thinks negatively of you. It's somewhat like dropping out of high school in the USA.
Q:
How long will you be there?A: The basic service period for males is 3 years, but I will be serving for 4.5 years. I had to sign a committment form for 1.5 extra years to get into the position I wanted.
Q:
Oh? And what's that?A: Unfortunately I can't say that here. You'll get over it. I can say two things, though:
1. It's not a combat unit. I'm not going to die.
2. It will be FUN! :D
Q:
So that means you'll be discharged when...?A: June 2009, I guess.
Q:
Does it pay well?A: The obligatory 3 years don't. The voluntary 1.5 years do.
Q:
Does this mean you'll never be around anymore?A: Until April X, 2005, I will be home sometimes, but very, very rarely. From April X and on, I expect (but can't yet guarantee) that I'll come back home every day, and be home on weekends (just like a job). "X" is not yet known.
Q:
Would it be accurate to say that your boot camp, starting almost immediately upon your recruitment, will be about 3 weeks long and is going to totally suck?A: Exactly.
Q:
I really miss you. How can I check what's up with you or send you a message?A: Contact Netcooler (AIM: AsafS99, ICQ: 61917199, MSN:
[email protected], email:
[email protected]). He's my best friend :-* and he should always be the most up to date.
Q:
Can I have a picture of you in uniform?A: Yes. In a month or less.
Q:
...in uniform, holding a gun?A: Maybe. I don't know. I'll try.
Q:
...holding a gun, naked?A: No.
Hmm, you were clearly answering, but I think we'd all like to know who was asking the questions, and why this question-asker wanted to see you naked.
1. Who is this Netcooler guy whom you speak of?
(btw, don't ask me anything related to BNLS, I know nothing of it. I barely know what it does, so don't ask tech support - this is not what Yoni wants to hear when he contacts me)
2. iago, I believe Yoni was trying to cover the entire spectrum of vL members and guests wanting to know what's up with him. I reckon the naked gun (pun not intended) pic WOULD HAVE BEEN suggested by either hismajesty or Jigsaw (probably hismajesty).
Anything else those guys should know?
Good luck Yoni. Remember that you're fighting the good fight and promoting Democracy in the middle east where it is very much needed. Be sure to h4x0r Osama for us or something. ;)
How bout naked not holding a gun?
Yeah, how 'bout that?
/whisper to hismajesty: I'll add the gun later in Photoshop *grin*

Yoni: GOOD LUCK MAN! I support Israel's troops 100%! Go take care of some hamas members before they take out some civilians!
Good luck to you Yoni. We'll all miss your zany sense of humor while you're away (and by "we" I really mean me, but I assume that my opinions are good enough for everyone else).
You're a braver man than I. I don't have it in me to join the military. Just the idea of associating myself with people whose job it is to kill people...ugh.

Netcooler you must keep me update with yoni so the yoni fan club can see the pictures ( no nude ones) of him in boot camp and such.
The yoni fan club will be sending emails and letters if you give the address to me i will forward it to the fan club
What is this Yoni fan club, and how can I join?
Uh.. I didn't know anyone hated them.. I thought it was all iraq.. :P

He didn't post what he was doing, but he told me before. Well, he told in broad form ("I'm working on computers") so I'm not sure if his stuff is top secret, but I'm assuming it is.

Hi! I am back for the weekend (Friday + Saturday).
Boot camp is much more fun than I expected.
It's more like a camp than an army boot camp. :)
Nearly all of the people are very cool.
We sleep in tents and eat crappy food.
I don't have a weapon yet. I will get one next week. (It will be an M-16 - the standard "boot camp gun".)
I will try to post a picture of myself in uniform this weekend.
Welcome back , even though its for the weekend :)

Wow they dont go overboard with the days you have off do they :p
The American boot camps don't give days off. It's at least 6 weeks worth of training all the way through.

Nonsense!
Let me explain. There are several "levels" of boot camp that the army offers, differing in length and discipline. I am doing the most sissy level, which is the shortest (3 weeks). It also has the least training (we only get a weapon on Monday - usually you get one in your first week).
I'm not going to the army for the basic training. That's just a formal requirement, for me to qualify as part of the army at all.
We're probably going to stay in the base next weekend, but there is a possibility that we'll go home again (with the weapons). If we do, I'll take pics.
Edit: I'm going back to base. 50% chance to be home next weekend, 90% chance to be home the weekend after that. The vL server was down while I was here so I couldn't upload pictures. Next time.

No. They got big by being in the right place at the right time, and by somehow convincing people that every other OS sucks (good marketing)
Ah, 'right place at the right time' is a good way to put it. I had something like that in my post, but I couldn't think of the right words and removed it.

Back for another weekend. It's almost unbelievable how sissy my boot camp is. We aren't even staying a Saturday in the base. (All other boot camps do, at least once and usually more.)
On Monday we got weapons. We got regular ("long") M-16's - the usual. Mine is currently locked in the closet.
On Wednesday and Thursday we were at the shooting range. I have proven to be good at shooting an Arab suicide bomber in case he chooses to stand there like a cardboard cutout and not move even after I shoot him 5 times. Oh well.
I will lose my weapon on Tuesday. Boot camp ends on Wednesday. (Yes... 2.5 weeks. The shortest boot camp there is. It's a new one, too. Half a year ago, the shortest possible was 3.5-4 weeks.)
I don't know exactly what will happen then. From the rumors I heard, I will be sent to some random base to do some random work (like cleaning), but for only a few days, and then the fun will start.
The people in my division are really cool. At least 3 of the people in my tent are math geeks. For instance when you unload the M-16 you have to yell "the weapon is unloaded, checked and on safe!" and some guy in my tent made up "the weapon is differentiable, continuous and convex!" (It sounds very similar in Hebrew... :P)
Quote from: UserLoser on December 27, 2004, 06:35 AM
Did (or will) they shave the hair off of your head?
No. The army doesn't require your hair to be completely shaved. You just need reasonably short hair. If you go to the recruiting base with not short enough hair, you get sent to the base's barber.
I got a haircut 2 days before my recruitment, and so they didn't cut my hair at the base. So I don't look any different.

No. To be certified to carry a sniper rifle, you have to go through lots of extra training which I am extremely uninterested in. Also, I think you have to be in a combat unit for that, which automatically disqualifies me.
Yoni, if you and a sniper were the only friendlies in combat (for that, assume that your NC unit was going somewhere and you got lost... and then the sniper found you, and you two hooked up... yeah, assume that) and the sniper dies, would you get in trouble if you were to use the sniper's rifle?
I'd think the hardest part of sniping is not revealing your location to the enemy.

The situation you describe is about as likely as the USA deciding to attack us and wipe us out.
In that case, I don't think I would get in trouble. Any prosecution against me would probably be invalid when we have no government or army high command anymore. :P
Clarification: Being in a non-combat unit means I don't get involved in any sort of "combat". The weapon is for self-defense only.

I'm not much into guns and stuff, but I was curious is the gun Yoni is holding an original M-16 (as used in Vietnam) or an M-16A2 (as used now.)
My gun is an M-16A1, with a few IDF tweaks.
I don't think you were intentionally correcting me, but thanks anyway. (The A2 doesn't exist I don't beleive, and I'm not sure why I typed that)

I'm pretty sure the A2 exists, as well as an A3. I don't know the differences, nor care that much, though.
hm, according to google they do. Further proof of my lack of gun knowledge.

Jeez.. they quiz you on this stuff in boot camp? (The more advanced levels)
Good luck, leifje. (Or how ever you spell it. I learned how to say good luck in Hebrew too, but of course I forgot.)

The gun quizzes in boot camp are a pathetic joke. All the questions are either like:
6. Question?
A. Something.
B. Something something.
C. Something something something something something, something something something, something something.
D. Something.
Or like...
9. It is ok to point a gun at a person...
A. Never
B. When it's funny
C. When he's annoying
D. When he owes you money
You have to try hard to not get a full score.
"Leifje"? No idea what you mean. "Good luck" literally is "mazal tov" (which also means "congratulations"). "Good luck" in the context you used it is "behatzlacha" (which means "with success").

What about a combination of C and D?

If you were wearing the msdn hat it would be better.
Yoni is lucky. Two people from my high school came back and visited over the winter break after they completed basic training. One went into the Marine Corps and he gets to go back and do more training now. The other went into the Army and now she expects to be deployed to Iraq sometime in the near future.

Sounds almost like molotov... like... molotov cocktail.
Yeah.

Yeah, Yoni. By "leifje", I meant "little love." I found some hebrew words in a play version of The Diary of Anne Frank. ^^. And by the way, I was going to say "mazeltov", but I forgot it. :P.
Yoni as a person whose family descends from Northern India I salute your efforts. Israel and India have had EXCELLENT relationships and a mutual help against the muslim dogs. Jews and Israleis are always welcome in India and Indians support Israel 100%! As a North Indian and as an American, I salute your effort. Go kick some dune coon ass!
Uh - Rah!!!

I've never heard of the word "leifje". Anne Frank wrote her diary in Dutch. But I haven't seen the play, so I don't know.
Well, the play is in English, and there is no dutch. It specifically said that the words "Mazeltov" and "Leifje" were Hebrew, but you know those pesky editors.

I know, just you lend it to Yoni for his photo opportunites sometimes..
Good Luck, dont let anyone get in the way. The midwestern barron backward farmers give you our full support, damn arabs? illegal aliens..*curses under breath.*
Just kill everyone in the world and there will not be any problems.
I consider not having any humans alive to be a problem, but I guess since humans cause most problems it's a decent rade off?
<3Yoni. I was reading in my book, 'The Asylum,' today, that Iran said as soon as they get nuclear weapons they're nuking Israel.
It pains me to see people go into the army, what a waste of time. Then they come back dilluded and brain washed. The koo koo houses doubled after the vietnam war. Yoni will be okay, i feel sorry for the ones that are face to face with death, and i dont mean flashbacks, you have to understand the tragedy, they leave the war but the war never leaves them.
Yeah, because freedom (and especially defending it) is such a waste of time.
Defending Freedom, i could understand fighting for that. Fighting for someone elses freedom risking your sanity, nope.
Eyedea, have you ever been in any branch of your country's military?
I havent, The military is corrupt.

Are you even old enough to join a branch of the military? Why do you think it's corrupt? I wonder what Groks opinion on that is.

Q: Oh? And what's that?
A: Unfortunately I can't say that here. You'll get over it. I can say two things, though:
1. It's not a combat unit. I'm not going to die.
2. It will be FUN!
Hmmmm, must be one of thoes paper pushing clurks :-P lol, J/K
Who knows, maybe I might be able to see you sometime since the canadian army has been out in that area lately. ^.^
Good Luck to you! The Millitary is always a good cause
A status change has occurred.

Q: Does this mean you'll never be around anymore?
A: Until April X, 2005, I will be home sometimes, but very, very rarely. From April X and on, I expect (but can't yet guarantee) that I'll come back home every day, and be home on weekends (just like a job). "X" is not yet known.
Everything went as planned, and it's approximately April X now.
Coolness.
