It was a syn flood. To my knowledge, dos is just a term meaning denial of service. in this case, a syn flood would be a type of dos attack.

DDoS is any kind of distributed denial of service attack.  The most effective DDoS is a syn flood, because it backs up the tcp message queue really badly without doing much else.
