I'm sorry but saving them as a JPEG in paint kills all the quality. (I blame MS)

Use PNG...

PNG is typically not much better than BMP for size, in a large screenshot.

I was obviously wrong about .png.  But apparently, .gif is the best.  One thing about .bmp and .tif is that they're consistant

When I saved my bmp in paint as a png it only took off .7 mb. I am guessing it all depends on the saving application?

Could be, I used "import" to take the screenshots. It's part of ImageMagick.
