Ugh. Almost as bad as the first one. That got 5 minutes before I laughed at it, this one got.. maybe 10.  Grima killed Saruman at Isenguard and I gave up... I mean come on! Also they spoiled my favourite bit of dialogue from the whole book!

Quote

We will have peace.. Yes, we will have peace. We will have peace when you and all your works are perished - and the works of your dark master, to whom you would deliver us! You are a liar, Saruman, and a corruptor of men's hearts. You hold out your hand to me, and I percieve only a finger of the claw of Mordor, cruel and cold! [...] When you hang from a gibbet at your window for the sport of your own crows, I will have peace with you, and orthanc!

Gibbets and crows? Dotard! What is the house of eorl but a thatched barn, where brigands drink in the reek, and their brats roll on the floor amongst the dogs? Too long have they escaped the gibbet themselves...

Damn stupid films.

Shouldn't this go in the Media Motel?! We should flog you!

I agree that the books were much better, especially if you're really interested in the story.  But overall, I enjoyed the movies, dispite their shortcomings.

But there are so many shortcomings! So many cliches.. so much melodrama... sigh.

Or maybe America :)

The script and movie were both created by Peter Jackson, who happens to be a New Zealander. Not sure what America has to do with any of this.

Regarding the movie's shortcomings...well...think of how much WORSE it almost was. Arwen at Helm's Deep...Sauron and Aragorn dueling at the Morannon...

All things considered, the movies are very well done. They just aren't the same story as the Lord of the Rings set down in the book. So what? Just appreciate them for what they are: an epic monument of film-making.

Yes, you can't have everybody...contributing to the main source repository.  That would be stupid and create chaos.

Opensource projects...would be dumb.

Meh

If any one has read the Hobbit i read it a few years back, did Bilbos sword shine blue when Orcs or Goblins were neer as in the film they say orcs but im sure its goblins.

It was paid for by Hollywood, is the connection.

I actually think that these films are pretty bad. The scenery, the cg, the look of them is amazing, and the people who did that a great job - but the script is rubbish. The acting is pretty wooden. The screenplay had far too many swooping cameras - was this film designed to give people vertigo? All the characters seemed, to me, to be ludicrous bufoons (Merry, Pipping, and Gimli come to mind) or tough, manly heroes. I could accept the theory that this is a different story, and has value in its own right.. but to be honest, the fact that it is the lord of the rings, or a weird version of it, is the only thing that redeems these films. If they weren't the lord of the rings, they'd have been dismissed as claptrap ages ago. It's the reputation and grandeur of the books, and the story, that gives these films credibility - and that they have failed to live up to that reputation by giving in to the temptation to indulge in melodrama, presumably in a misguided attempt to make the story more exiciting.

All they've ended up with is ~12 hours of cliches. It is a very pretty 12 hours, though.

Meh

I dont see Legolas as manley. Gimli reminds me of a welsh person in the way he speeks. Merry and Pippin are like teenagers who mess about. I think in all its very good and kicked Harry Potters ass when they were released together.

It was most definately orcs in the book.
