The bosses on Super Mario World have names like Iggy Koopa, ect. because they're his kids.

I doubt he's a dragon, because he has a shell. Dinosaurs and dragons don't breath fire, so I don't know.

Bowser is commonly described as being a fictitious type of dinosaur.  Your parents may not have told you yet, but dragons and koopas are mythical monsters.
