Server hardware

Hi guys -- I'm looking to set up a streaming video service on a campus LAN. We are going to have a very large library of video (5 TB+). Was wondering what sort of hardware would be needed to store 5 TB or more of data (with room to grow), and what sort of server hardware would be needed to support streaming of this video (assume I have an ultra-efficient zero-copy streaming solution implemented in C already). I think I need to use a SAN, but I'm not sure how that all works.

Also, is there a more efficient way of organizing a filesystem than just dumping all of the files in one directory?

You can use a SAN, or NAS, or whatever.

If you have the budget, get a good quality server from Sun or HP.  Talk to a sales rep and tell them what you're looking for.
