QuoteThere was no jumping up and down or fist pumping from Gary Karlin after his hole-in-one at the Yampa Valley Golf Course. Not that Karlin wasn't excited, he just didn't see it go in.

"One of the guys said, 'I think it went in,'" said the 55-year-old from Littleton. "I knew it was close, but I never saw it hit."

Karlin's drive was on the 154-yard, par-3 11th hole Tuesday afternoon.

"It played a little farther because of the hole placement," Karlin said. "I knew I hit a good distance for the club."

Karlin used a seven iron to reach the green that has a pond to the right and three sand traps around it.

When Karlin and the other two golfers he was with reached the green there were only two balls visible.

"I immediately went to look in the sand," he said. "When it wasn't there I went to the hole."

Even when he saw the ball in the hole there was no break dancing or bending down to kiss the green.

"I still had 11 holes of golf to play," he said. "I would have been embarrassed to turn in a bad score, so I wanted to keep an even keel."

He finished with a 37 on the back nine and a 76 for the day.

"The eagle on 11 helped," he said.

Karlin is a senior sales engineer for Diamond Power in Littleton.

He visits the Craig and Hayden power plants every six to eight weeks.

"I play the course up here every time I get the chance," he said.

"I really like it."

The ace was Karlin's second of his golfing career. Ten years ago, he had one on the 17th hole at the Englewood Municipal course. He's been golfing for 22 years.

It was the first hole-in-one at the YVGC in 2005.

"Maybe there will be a bunch now," he said.

According to the United Sta-tes Golf Register (www.usgolf-register.org), which collects data on holes-in-one, the odds of making a hole-in-one are about 1 in 22,000 rounds to 30,000 rounds.

YVGC pro Chuck Cobb said the course averages three to six holes-in-one a year.

"The 11th is one of the more accessible holes," he said. "It had probably had the most."

Cobb said it seems that the aces run in cycles.

He hoped that Karlin's rare shot will start it up for this season.

"Let's hope he got is started," Cobb said.

"It's like the Lotto. The guys who get it might not always be the guy you would expect."

Hrm...

Hitler was on the cover of Time magazine -- in fact, he was Time's Man of the Year -- TWICE.

I've been in the paper at least three times, and on a big Arizona news program once, as well as a cable TV airing.

My mom and my aunt have also been in the paper on a couple occasions.

My dad is in the phone book.

BFD.
