Wav Visuals..how does this work?

Does directsound make the wave line thingys that programs like soundwave and cooledit have or are they done manually? I'm not sure what they are called, but I need to do something like this.;

Suggest you do them yourself. You just draw a line graph of the sound data and that's it.

There may possibly be a library or open source tool that you could look at. But don't ask me for help, because I'm guessing in the dark...
