Money or fame?

To me there are different kinds of fame. "stardom" fame which includes movie/pop stars and such, these people tend to have lots of dirt dug up on them and are covered in tabloids/talk radio or such. Then there is "fake" fame in which the person is mostly known because they are covered in the news media, examples would be mark hacking, scott peterson, bush, kerry, most politicians. Finally you have what id call real fame, people who are known by a large group of people for something good/bad that they have done that wasn't "made a story" out of by the news media. Examples for this to me would include Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds, the olympians of your country who won/lost and didn't use drugs.
Anyways id go for the money.

Bill Gates is famous because he's rich.  If he didn't have such a strangle hold on the market, he wouldn't be famous.

Linus Torvalds, on the other hand, made some fantastic contributions to the world.  He did a lot of work, and never asked for anything in return.  He's the closest to a Hero that I have.

Other names that come to mind are Dennis Ritchie and Richard Stallman.

That's very similar to sports heroes.  There's all kinds of great heroes in sports, that I've never heard of.

I would imagine it's like that in every field.  There are people who are famous, for what they do, and others who do it know about them.
