I have one of those, I call it empty-space.  If somebody wants to hax0r me, I unplug my crossover cable from the back of my computer and they hit my firewall!

It just my opinion that Zone Alarm, Black Ice Defender, etc. are a waste of money.  Of course I'm looking at it from a different perspective than most people.  I think a well configured and maintained box is much better.

What good is a firewall going to do you if somebody exploits a vulnerability through a purposefully open port?

It's good because you can still use the port locally, and yes, firewalls are completely unnescisary, the day i use one is because i have 15 trojans that appeared out of thin air, or my brother downloads too many porno installers.

Some people I know use firewalls - warez of course. No money wasted, and they're better off using that than learning how to configure things properly.

They are actually really neat. I don't remember the name they had now, something like "filtering switch". It's like a router/firewall except it doesn't use up an IP.
