General Discussion / Re: Effexor
September 12, 2007, 08:55 PM
Don't listen to these retarded Scientologists.  Psychiatry has a legitimate place in its understanding of brain function.  If you have an anxiety disorder or depression or any of a number of disorders, psychiatric medication can be a godsend.  Despite the fact that Effexor in particular can have some nasty side effects, they've been judged reasonable for the benefit that they provide.  As much as I hate the overprescription of medications today, there's absolutely no reason someone with a legitimate need shouldn't take them.  Sometimes it's necessary to use something synthetic to get neurochemistry back to normal.  Rather than listen to the moronic suggestions of people without M.D.s (hint: exercise and sunshine don't cure depression), listen to your doctor.  If you have concerns about the side effects, talk to your doctor.  More often than not, they'll be willing to give you something else with similar function.  Just bear in mind that there's a reason he chose Effexor to begin with.

I've never looked into Clustering before, or really even knew what it was before I googled it after seeing this thread (so basically don't ask me about it). Though, hopefully these resources I just found can of a help to you.

I had seen that site while I was looking around, the only problem is that I don't have multiple network adapters or multiple storage cards to link the hardware in the way that they suggest.  The vast majority of sites I had seen regarding clusters didn't require such complex interconnectivity, which is why I intended to go with a single network and no physical connection between storage.

Additionally, I have the book and it's more about the policy and software end of things e.g., fitting it into your budget, managing downtime, and configuring the cluster service.  Furthermore, the cluster configuration they recommend in the one mentioned on the TechNet site involving integrated storage controllers and multiple NICs per cluster node.

Your question didn't say you wanted help.  Your question was whether or not people had experience with it:
As it turns out, people with minor deductive faculties are able to infer that I'm looking for someone with experience because it's not something I know how to do and could therefore use help.  But that's ok, A+ for effort.

I don't know anything about it, I haven't seen any "How To Cluster Windows Server 2003 Servers for Dummies" things out there.  A lot of the pages make reference to a domain (which I don't have, or have any idea how to administer), so the whole process is over my head.  I don't know where to start.

Awesome, thanks.  I actually wanted a thread with sarcastic comments about whether or not Windows clusters could be built instead of receiving actual help.

Yeah...  Which is probably why I mentioned using Windows Server 2003 (which coincidentally has a Clustering Service--who'd have thought?).  And as much as I appreciate your anecdote there, I was actually looking for experience with Windows clusters so that I could put one together.

General Discussion / Windows Server Cluster
June 08, 2007, 12:53 PM
I've got four systems with Windows Server 2003 installed and nothing to do with them, so I thought I'd try to turn them into a cluster.  Does anyone have experience with this, particularly on Windows?

Sweden has peacefully had peace for a longer period than the US. Sweden has not sought violent solutions in a long time. Thus peaceful solutions for peace have been proven to last longer than the violent solutions the US keeps selecting.

One might also notice that Sweden isn't exactly a player on the world scene.

The easiest way to do this will be to do something like:

' You could use a static variable for this, but whatever.
Public WinsockCount As Integer

Private Function InitVars()
    ' Assume you already have a winsock(0) on the form.
    WinsockCount = 1
End Function

Public Function CreateNewWinsock(Optional ByVal Server As String = "SomeServer.com")
    ' Create the new Winsock control
    Load FormWhatever.winsock(WinsockCount)
    FormWhatever.winsock(WinsockCount).Connect(Server)

    WinsockCount = WinsockCount + 1
End Function

Back on FormWhatever, you'll notice that the first parameter of all winsock events in now Index as Integer.  This lets you determine which winsock control is calling the event, so to get properties or use methods, you can always do winsock(Index).whatever.

I'd have to recommend this one.

How much is the cost of the server?

<snip> I'll be paying around $300/month for it.<snip>

It's awesome when people read the thread before posting.

If its under 100 a month, I am in.

I suspect that people are misunderstanding what I'm doing here.  I'm not looking for people to share the costs of the server with me.  I am looking for someone who has some sort of idea for a business or project that they would like to run, but never had a server from which to launch it.  I'm basically offering that server, free of charge for a year or so, while they get established.  After that time, I'd expect them to be making enough to cover the cost of the server themselves.  Think of it as an investment into someone's business idea.

how much bandwidth? and what are you paying per month / yearly? and how is the uptime on the server and how many ip addresses can be used?
Also how are the protection against ddos attacks and what is able to be added to this server purely anything? Does it have limitations. IE: No irc , No porn. What type of tos comes with it?

It's unmetered.  That is to say, no bandwidth limits.  I'll be paying around $300/month for it.  The uptime is unmeasured, and IPs are unlimited provided their use can be justified.  IRC and adult content are acceptable, but nothing illegal (i.e. warez, child pornography, spam).

I'm replying instead of editing because no one needs to see ads for she-male porn...  I hope.

I've had someone come to me with questions about the server, so I thought I'd let everyone see the responses:

QuoteWhat are the server's specifications?
I'm undecided on the specs, but it will be at least 2 GHz with at least 1 GB of RAM and 300 GB HD space.

QuoteWhere is the server located?
In the United States.

QuoteWhat connection is it on?
100mbit redundant to Cogent, Level3 Abovenet, and Telia.  Note: I actually told someone wrong.  The second provider is not Level3, it's Abovenet.  My mistake, sorry.

QuoteWhat operating system will the server have?
It can be Windows Server, FreeBSD, Slackware, or Fedora Core.

General Discussion / Want a dedicated server?
September 15, 2006, 02:31 PM
For anyone who's interested, I am going to be leasing a dedicated server.  I intend to use it for basic hosting of my own stuff, however, that means that most of its resources will be going to waste.  What I'm looking for is an individual or a few individuals who have some sort of idea how to get it to pay for itself.  I'm going to put up the money for a year or two after which I'd like it to pay for itself.  I don't much care what you (as an applicant) want to do with the server, as long as it's legal.  Whether it's some sort of project, offering hosting, whatever, it doesn't matter to me as long as you think you can make it profitable.

And in case I haven't made it clear, the person/people selected to try it out will have full access to the server and all of its resources.

If anyone's interested in taking me up on this offer, you can contact me on AIM at Teh User or via private message here.

General Discussion / Windows XP RAM Question
August 28, 2006, 02:13 PM
Does anyone know how much RAM is supported by Windows XP?  I'm looking to get a new laptop and was thinking 4 GB of RAM, however, while customizing one over at Gateway's site, it said:
QuoteMicrosoft Windows XP recognizes a maximum of 3GB memory.
If that's the case, there's no reason to get 4 GB of memory.  But I don't see any reason for a 3GB restriction, so if anyone could shed some light on the issue, I'd appreciate it.
