(note, however, that my Linux desktop has a rotating wallpaper with about 20 different ones. Most of them involve penguins, some involve Cthulhu.)
Also notice the little AMoR penguin on the active window? :D
That is a sweet desktop you have there Spht.

Mine (http://www.valhallalegends.com/files/adronsdesktop.png)'s just 53kB.
Me and Thing are the only ones with Linux, therefore we're the only ones who count :)
People who promote Linux by putting wallpapers which insult Windows on a Windows system suck!
Hostile -- Only took a minute or so to download.
Adron -- I'm going to name my Recycle Bin Papperskorgen!
As a side note, you should disable your wallpaper when you're taking screen shot of your desktop. A screenshot with no wallpaper should be saved as PNG or GIF, and one with a wallpaper should be saved as well-compressed JPEG.
Edit: Also, people need to use My Documents as a dumping grounds for random things. Your desktop should always be clean!
I think that wallpapers are very important to the desktop and should be preserved :P
And that background wasn't really meant to be anti-windows, but I wanted a linux penguin and that was the first/cutest one I found. The fact that it says anti-windows is just a side-effect :P
And I don't use my documents for a dumping ground for random things, I use the recycling bin. Anything worth keeping can go in my quicklaunch-ish bars, and anything else is garbage.
An empty desktop is a good desktop. I never see mine, there's always some fullscreen window blocking it. I think there might be one or two icons on it, though...
http://holyknights.xepher.net/soul/SoulDesk.jpg (http://holyknights.xepher.net/soul/SoulDesk.jpg) - reduced quality a bit to make it 300kB rather than 700.
Oh and yea, no icons should be on a desktop, uuuugly.

Yes, but it's (usually) more convenient to put things in the start menu than the desktop. Besides, winkey-d and show desktop typically screw up the order of windows when restoring them, which is fairly annoying when you have lots of things open.
I am so used to running 4 desktops that I would find it difficult to be restrained to only one.
I use #4 for running a variety of monitoring software which stay open all the time.
I use #3 for downloads. I might initiate a download in #1 or #2 but a quick clickety click and I can send that window to #3 and get it out of my way.
#2 and #1 I use for regular stuff and I switch easily between the two.
I like to have an interesting wallpaper because I run my terminals with transparency. It's nice having a pretty face looking at me from behind the windows. :P
[edit] XMMS is set to run on all desktops. :)

btw, how do you make terminals translucent like that?
And I agree, if I'm working on code/homework I like to have the extra desktops to quickly switch between reference materials and work and other stuff (chat windows, for example).
And do you want a picture of me to make your wallpaper? If you need an extra pretty face, I mean ;)

Now, why would you need so many programs running?
Personally I tend to dump everything on my desktop. And I hate the taskbar, being at the default size is still way too big/annoying.

Yes. I do this. But I've learned to dump random things very neatly, makes them easier to spot later.
http://yoni.valhallalegends.com/stuff/MyDocuments.png
My Documents is conveniently located in C:\Misc. (I am very prejudiced against C:\Documents and Settings - it is a good idea, but very horribly implemented. What's the idea of putting not only spaces, but even multiple spaces, in directory names?! Why didn't they just learn from *nix and name it /home?!)

Too big?! I think it's too small. I set mine recently (more recently than the screenshot linked in this post) to a height of 3 instead of 2, where 1 height unit is for the Desktop quiclaunch bar and 2 height units are for the tasks. I like it this way so far, it's not obstructive at all (with a 1280x1024 resolution...).
Maybe if I set the resolution higher I wouldn't mind as much, But 1024x768 works for me so far.
[edit]
Yea, at 1280x1024 I wouldn't mind the size at all. But then again a cheap crappy monitor looks horrible at 1280x1024 so I'm not going to keep it.
ya skys desktop is super boring. I mean I don't prefere to make mine half as sexy as I could (like Soul Takers, which is nice btw :p) but I like something there, and the second and third that blizzard made for wow wallpapers I like the most. Other then that I just use normal('Classic') windows theme and other standard icons to what I feel is a good balance between pleasant and productive.

I could probably load 16 as well, possibly more. On top of I could most definitly load atleast 4 more remote desktops, so with that, I surely have 32000x24000. So I must win, right? :P ::)
Are we counting shell accounts? Those should each be 1x1 :)
So who wins, and whats the prize?
Adron wins since he definitely has the leetest icon names. His prize is a hooker and a case of beer. Not any of this American crap beer though. I'll have some good Bavarian Bier for him and a first class hooker too.
I disagree that American beer is of lower quality than any other country's beer. It's a provincial elitist attitude not supported by facts known to me, thus it must be untrue, or at least unproven. Otherwise, I'd know about it. :p

About the redirection -- I personally turned off "Referer logging" on the browser so sites like that don't know where I came from and show me the picture. It's actually quite a handy option which is available on all good browsers.

Yea but it doesn't answer the question where the shot was taken.
My desktop is Azul, when I first loaded WinXP it was Bliss.
Yes, steam blows, even though it's been much improved. I do like it a little better than the old system though because you can see if friends are online before joining a server, and it's a little program instead of full screen game. I used to hate opening up CS just to find my favourites all full.

haha, agreed on everything there.
<edit> Except for lack of programs -- he has them on the bar at the bottom. I do that too, except I tend to dump off stuff on my desktop and clean it up when it gets messy.
I'd bet anything that you need a sundial to run programs on that computer...
I dump stuff on my desktop and then when I 'organize' it, it all goes into my 'Stuff' folder. I couldn't stand all those open programs, since #1 it's ugly and #2 I don't like my taskbar to be enlarged.
I don't mind...Personally I find it annoying to have to re-open things. Besides, you have to reboot more often if you open and close your programs all of the time. ;) Icons are ugly btw...I keep my desktop clean. Everything is properly organized in the folder Files and many sub-directories exist for further organization...Kind of like Yoni's Misc folder, but better.

I prefer all my icons on the left too, I hate auto-aligning because they always get messed up.
I don't put program shortcuts in my taskbar, I hate how it looks, I also don't keep many items open, and I try to minimize the number of active programs are in the bottom right. I prefer an organized taskbar, and readily accessible desktop.
I use no wallpaper, no desktop icons, no screen saver. I can't stand desktop icons. That's the one thing that annoys me when I'm fixing someones computer and they have like 50 icons on the desktop.

Do you also lack a personality?
No I just don't need a picture on a screen that I only look at to describe my personality. And I have a low end computer so I try to save my resources.
I have no wallpaper or screensaver, and I love the default windows theme (as of win2k). I'm on the computer quite a bit, so I like it to look clean and be easy on the eyes.
I think I'm the only person that likes the crayola XP theme. :\

I go back and forth between blue and grey, wish there was a black one. I like the new windows themes, just a tad too colourful.
I don't like how it displays the active title bar. Seems to childish to me. IMO, it's more professional with the standard look. Also, if you use more than two task bar layers (I have 3) it displays the status square-section badly. It really annoys me. I also just don't like the buttons. ;)
But Windows 2000 displays it sooooo much better than XP/2003 for the standard look (default/only-one in Windows 2000). In XP/2003 the menu transitions (especially in the start menu) are somewhat choppy...

Except you appear to launch several programs at once "incase you'll need them in the future." That's an interesting way of doing things, but that's what shortcuts are for.
However, I doubt Skywing was using all 40 programs at the same time. He probably keeps a lot of them open to go back to after a few hours maybe? :P

I don't know... I usually close programs when I'm finished with them, instead of wondering if I'll need them again in a couple hours. He didn't have the types of things you have open though (component services, computer management, policy editor, performance viewer, services, telnet server administration, ...????). Again, there ARE shortcuts.
I'm curious as to why you have Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and QuickTime installed. I just use Windows Media Player. And you also have Internet Explorer and FireFox...
I like how you have one of everything opened though. I think you're trying to take the viewer's attention away from the bad quality wallpaper by having lots of random icons on the task bar.

Just another commend on WindowMaker -- I the start menu-ish thing it has. I right click on the background, or on the edge of the screen, and I get a list of the programs I specify. It's also fairly easy to edit WMRootMenu to put the programs I like there:
http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/programs.jpg
<edit> if the site is still napping, try http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~umbowes1/programs.jpg
I enjoy organization -- if I have 40 programs open, I could never find the one I need at the time. I try to keep <10 open at once, and generally have them equally distributed between 4 desktops, grouped by what logically goes together (like, a man-page in a console beside a window where I'm programming).
I've been playing with different desktops since installing SuSE 9.1. Right now I'm on Gnome 2.4 but I'm going to give WindowMaker a try also. :)

You got my job reversed. WE'RE the ones that get pissed off when an "incident" occurs. But we have to test our own servers, too. We just got a new IPS, so on Monday we get to set up an unpatched box behind it and throw everything we can at it (manually, with Nessus, and with Appscan). It'll be a fun day for sure!
And I do use tabbed browsing sometimes, but it depends on the situation. I often double-click the icon and go to a site without thinking, plus I sometimes close all my tabs without thinking. So having different instances can be handy.

If you just wnna play around with something knoppix-std is a live-cd that uses fluxbox. Live-cd's run from your cd-rom using ramdisk. So you just pop it in and boot from disk and your up and running. And when your done just reboot and pull out the disk and you'll boot back into your main OS. http://www.knoppix-std.org/

I think the problem might be that WindowMaker has neither a system tray or a taskbar. But if you press F11, or middle-click on background, you get a list of running/hidden windows. That would probably do it.
But it seems silly to run msnclient under wine, since Linux has perfectly good Msn clients :-)

The reason this person was trying to use MSNClient was due to very annoying gaim bugs, such as crashing lots and trying to HTML-ify everything sent over MSN despite that MSN doesn't use HTML for text formatting.
Perhaps those things have been fixed now, but at the time it was an issue.

I haven't had any problems with gaim, and I've been using it since 0.78. So who knows?

Hey you stole my background! I use a cropped version on the same picture.
Eh, while we're back in business:
http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/linux10.jpg
I change my background every week or so lately. The dockapps on the right are, from the bottom:
Clock/Calendar
Xmms remote control
Wireless link strength
Uptime
Cpu/Network/Ram/Pagefile/Battery/etc.
I like your background iago. I haven't been on Linux in ages, whenever I get on it I can never think of anything to do that I couldn't do on Windows. Though, the most of what I do consists of just browsing the internet and playing games.
Anyway, since the election is over I (reluctantly) changed my wallpaper (http://www.clan-e1.net/trust/images/browndesktop.png).
New (by now, old) wallpaper:

For a second, I thought the dialog you added to Kill Bill was Hebrew. Then I looked a little mroe carefully :)
Decided to not use Windows Classic and install a *gasp* theme! Taught myself how to do system information stuffs in Samurize (http://www.samurize.com) over the past two days, and this (http://www.digitaldoozie.net/home/images/desktop.png) is how it turned out. The program was pretty easy to learn and I tinkered with the stuff a lot. I didn't make the graphics, though. ;)
wow thats sexy

I tried that clipboard one, and totally hated it.
Your calendard looks cooler than mine, though! :(!
We should compare Snort logs. I get hit by the same annoying http exploit CONSTANTLY. And it's an overflow for WebDAV, so it's very long and takes up a lot of room in Apache's logs :(
That clipboard icon is just one I picked for gedit. I like your audio player thing, what's that all about? Also, I have kept myself firewalled for too long and miss the abuse of Winders machines on the Verizon network. Just this weekend I turned off the firewall and installed Snort so I don't have a lot of data yet. I might even run it with MySQL and ACID like I used to. It makes pretty pages to look at. :)

I need some kind of snort reporting software, it's too unweildly to look at the logs.
Starting from the third icon, this is what I have:
allin1 -- Cpu, ram, network, battery, etc. monitor. I'd like to write it so I can use it remotely to see my server(s)'s info.
wmupmon -- Ugly uptime monitor, comes in lots of colors
wmclock -- duh
wmmultipop3 -- very handy
wmwifi -- programmed crappily, I'm going to rewrite this
And the bottom one is just a gaim conversation window, miniturized or iconified or whatever they call it.
Your gedit icon looks exactly like wmclipboard. Basically, whenever I highlighted it something, it would pull it to its own clipboard buffer and cancel the highlight. You could then click on it, and paste the text it grabbed. The thing I didn't like was how it unhighlighted it. I should have checked if there was a switch to turn it off before I removed it.

They Said It:
Chattanooga women's basketball coach, comparing his team with No. 1 Tennessee: "Their freshmen were high school McDonald's All-Americans; our freshmen ate at McDonald's in high school."
Now that's funny.

Konfabulator? Maybe because the programmers were once employed by an Apple subcompany and are all Mac enthusiasts. The program was made for Macs and was then ported to Windows.

Not saying it to that, we must have been writing our posts at the same time and you posted before me. I was directing that towards Masons post.
Then what are you talking about? My desktop seems to be that of the discussion, are you saying that Apple invented calendars and the weather?

Actually, I think Microsoft has a patent on the word "weather" and you probably owe them royalties for using it in a sentence.
So do you! :(

Yeah, that's Noodlez' picture
I am trying out some new dockapps in a pilot stage:
http://www.valhallalegends.com/iago/linux15.jpg
The first ons is a handy dandy calculator. I was hoping for one that was just like a pocket calculator, where I could just click the buttons, and it woudl show up on a little screen. One of those DOES exist, but the original site it was on is dead, and I'm not seeing any mirrors. But this one lets me right-click, and it brings up a little window where I can do calculations, and it saves them there. It's not bad, it can do hex and octal too, and apparently some functions.
Then I have one that just displays my workspaces. It also has bubble-help things so I can see the name when I mouseover. I'm so used to control-alt-left and right, I dont' think I'll ever use this much. But we'll see.
Third, I have a mounter majigger. It lets me mount/umount/eject my cdrom drive with one *clickety*. It also shows me the space remaining on my mounts, if I go left and right. Optionally, it changes it automatically every couple seconds, but I don't hold with that. I might try it out later, though :)
