During the past hurricanes in FL last year, the power was out, it was 4 in the morning, i ran through a stoplight (nonworking) got 4 points on my linsense for it. Just me and the cop on the road.

I canada (and america too I guess) you have demerits on your license, each offense adds a demerit and once you hit 8 or 12 you can have your license suspended, among other punishments. After which, your demerit limit decreases, and punishments become more harsh. Punishments may be suspension of license, jail time, all sorts of thing.

demerits do for sure.  You gain merits for driving flawlessly, which reduces the cost of insurance and license renewal.  When you have an accident or any kind of moving violation (speeding, etc.) you lost merits.  If you're below 0, they call them demerits.  I've been driving flawlessly since I was 17 (almost 5 years) and I have 1 merit.
