Is that first one Xeon processor manual?  That's what I got, and no Volume 1.  I assume the demand was too high, so it's probably on backorder somewhere.  We should bitch that we want our moneys back :D
This'll make an interesting test for broken AV:

FYI -- I got this email from someone at Intel:

"To order publications or texts in hardcopy form, or to check the status of an order you have already placed, you can contact the Technical Documentation Center at 1-800-548-4725"

Well, there's your problem!  I would suggest ordering volume 2, at least, it's the only one I'll ever use most likely.

The 'optimizing' book appears quite useful.  It describes different situations, which code to use, and even explains why to use them.

For example, it talks about the use of INC and DEC, and says you should generally look to replace them with ADD and SUB instead.  The reason?  INC and DEC do not affect all flags, while ADD and SUB do.  This could lead to subtle programming errors from the former's usage if you are expecting all flags to change.

It even has examples on optimizing C code for the Intel compilers.
