MP3 Player Recommendations

I'm looking to buy my first portable MP3 player.  Yup, first.  Primary feature I'd like is for the UI and database to be programmable.  Maybe Java?  I'm supposing one would write the code on a PC virtual mp3 player environment and upload it to the mp3 player to test and run.

The reason I want it programmable is how certain I will be unhappy with whatever menu, grouping, and filter system provided by the manufacturer's default software.

Is anyone using such an mp3 player and have comments?

Asking here BEFORE I go do my untargeted searches.

I liked the original iPod Video (now the iPod classic).  Not sure about its ability to be programmed.

However, the iPod Touch and iPhone SDK supports Objective-C programming.

After 3 years, it's on the horizon.  The new JinxBot, and BN#, the managed Battle.net Client library.

Only MP3 players I've had are various versions of the iPod and they've been great, very simple to use and I never had to look at them to figure out what I was trying to do (good for in car use). I don't think those are programmable though, but the iPhone/iPod Touch have been hacked extensively and with the SDK coming out I'm sure you could whip something up. I find that my iPhone though is a totally awful MP3 player compared to the orignal iPod lines because you really need to be looking at the screen to accomplish anything.

I have an iRiver H10, which I like fairly well and is a heck of a lot cheaper than an iPod.  The software it comes with is a little clunky, but I replaced it with rockbox, which is free, open source, and coded in C.

Rockbox supports plenty of other mp3 players too, so you can always pick one of those if you're OK with Rockbox :)

is your post a joke or something?  i think he was looking for something actually PROGRAMMABLE (as in write his own code) instead of a feature allowing you to play songs in a user-defined order

nah, it was completely serious.

Hmm, so, it does not indicate the language platform supported.  How long have you owned this mp3 player, and what type of API did it provide?  Did you write your code on the PC and upload it to the player?

warz

The language platform support is very sexy and hot. The API provided is of the foreign type. It can be a little whacky at first, but then you realize it's an API, too. I wrote the code on a piece of paper, and it has a feeder that you feed the paper into - or, I guess that's what that big opening panel is for. It supports both cursive and non-cursive. Beware, this programmable mp3 player is not for the casual listener. It has very low tolerance for casual listeners.

you REALLY dont know anything about cd players and warz is just making a joke out of this... that isn't PROGRAMMABLE.  when it says "programmable cd memory function" it means you set a list of songs to play in a specific order, i.e. play song 3, then 1, then 5, then 12, etc.  there is no API, there is no CODE, you cannot upload things to CD players...
