Agreed.  Just recently somebody told me "You'll never get rich off open source", and, although I don't completely agree with that, I still said "so? I don't do this for the money".  As long as I have enough to live on I'm happy.

Actually, I saw one once, we talked about Linux.  I was thinking with the wrong head, though, since when we were done talking I walked away and never saw her again.  *sigh*

It's about mortgage, car payments, savings for retirement, clothing, food, entertainment.  All these things cost money.  If I happened to love basket weaving, I would still program during the day, and do basket weaving at night because programming pays the bills.  Unlikely I could basket weave for a living and program for fun at night.

You can make plenty of money being a doctor, or a lawyer, or a manager.  
You can pay the bills with any number of jobs.  The reason I do programming is because I enjoy it more than the others

The problem with those professions (doctor, lawyer, etc...) is that you have no life what so ever. They not only own your time, they own your freaking soul. At least being a programmer will give you some freedom to spend your money.
