I was just chillin' at home, and saw this in Op [vL]:

[0:27:27] :KeV: was banned by [vL] (random).
[0:27:31] Insecure was banned by [vL] (random).
[0:27:36] :KeV: was banned by [vL] (random).
[0:27:40] Insecure was banned by [vL] (random).
[0:27:45] :KeV: was banned by [vL] (random).

I thought it was somewhat odd, since they were already banned, why ban further?
QuoteEvery generation of humans believed it had all the answers it needed, except for a few mysteries they assumed would be solved at any moment. And they all believed their ancestors were simplistic and deluded. What are the odds that you are the first generation of humans who will understand reality?

After 3 years, it's on the horizon.  The new JinxBot, and BN#, the managed Battle.net Client library.

You've just located global warming.

People wonder why I +F almost everybody.

I was considering setting * to +F just to get rid of spammy/pointless bans.

I agree. Randomban is not useful.

iago

Nor is idleban - it encourages people to make noise.  But I think we've had this conversation before :)

Falcon[anti-yL]

Yeah, I was idlekicked and idlebanned, no <3 for me?

ZeroBot is designed more to protect members and hold accountable non-members...

All the auto-moderation features (random ban, repeated message ban, idle ban, etc) are just there so we have less work to do.  I think they're great and should never be removed.

iago

repeated message ban is fine.  But why idle ban?  Is it really a good idea to ban people for NOT making noise?  Wouldn't we want to encourage guests to be quiet rather than making sure they talk at least once for every 8 or so of our messages?

<edit> in that case, I guess it would be "thuscelackpass"

<edit2> oops, I meant it would be thuscelackpast

What purpose does a guest serve in the channel if they're not saying anything?  Ideally a visitor should come to the channel, discuss their purpose for being in the channel, then leave. Idle ban is a reminder and punishment that they're idling in the channel.

So as soon as people come in the channel they should start talking?  Because idleban is fairly quick if people are talking, and maybe a guest wants to know what's going on before interrupting.

I personally find it's rude if I join somebody else's channel where people are talking and interrupt them to ask a question - I'll generally wait for a gap in the conversation or for a polite pause to talk.  If I was a guest in out's channel, I would do the same thing and I would get idlebanned almost certainly - but it's hard to put yourself in other people's shoes when you think you're better than them (which is sometimes the case, but not necessarely always).

That's just bad luck for the visitor.  They can come back in a few days or week when the ban expires to try again.  If they're really sharp they'll e-mail the person they're trying to contact.

iago

What if they're just trying to be friendly?  Or is vL just completely closed to meeting new people now?

Falcon[anti-yL]

I left my bot in there for like 5 minutes while I went to go play a game and when I came back I got idlebanned. Its not like the channel would be full with afk people and other people can't join.
