Incidentally, it was Netscape 4 or 5 point something, the best the the browsers in our ancient Solaris lab have.

lol nice Grok, replete with full XHTML 1.0.

Per the XHTML DTD, you can and should use the:

<? xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>

document tag at the top.
