Connection to host (Arranged team invite)

as the client, how do i connect to the host? i know the server sends you the host's ip and port that you need to connect to, but when i try to connect it doesnt send me into the 'game lounge'. Are there more packets I need to send? Also, do i connect with the same socket that I used to connect to battle.net with or do i use an entirely different one?

edit: just in case.. im using war3 (i dont know much about the other games)
