Proxies and Chat

I have two questions. Is it possible to connect chat clients through SOCKS 4/5 proxies? If this is possible, will it work with BG3 as well?

Why wouldn't it work for SOCKS5?

I've noticed that SOCKS5 won't usually work on Madd0x or ZDSBots. Unless you mark them as Socks4 on the bot, ZDS does this for you though.
