PS2 Harddrive

I noticed that my friend's ps2 has a port on the inside that looks exactly like a standard IDE cable would plug into it.  Has anybody heard anything about Sony releasing a harddrive, or has anybody tried sticking a standard harddrive into it?

I believe the PS2 hard drive either just came out, or is about to come out.

I know the Playstation2 linux kit comes with one.
