It connects via BNLS as an "easy" connection protocol. Personally I'd recommend using BNCSutil.dll by Cloaked. It's very well writen from what I've gathered from it, uses hashing, and is very easily integrated. StealthBot also uses this as well as the Myriad project. You can get BNCSutil from http://www.bncsutil.ionws.com

Not to mention there's a well written visual basic example of how to implement BNCSutil.
