General Discussion / GRE
July 23, 2006, 12:45 AM
Anyone taken this? I have been looking into graduate schools lately and it seems a lot of them require the GRE along with the CS subject test (I plan on continuing with CS). How much preparation should I put into it? I get the feeling that it is similar to the SAT in that the questions are not particularly difficult, but in order to do well on the test it is a matter of learning how to take it. Any other tips/suggestions/etc?

Computer Support Issues / Linux, NAT and UPnP
December 13, 2005, 04:24 PM
So I have a linksys UPnP-enabled router. Behind my linksys router are several machines, one of which is my ubuntu server with ssh installed. I want to be able to get past the linksys firewall via UPnP. The ubuntu server requests a dynamic IP (NAT), so manual port forwarding won't always work. Is there some sort of linux UPnP client that will ask the router to open a port for the requested IP?

The other solution to this problem would to set a static IP on my ubuntu server. But the problem is my ISP's DNS servers change from time to time. Is there a way to request via DHCP (or some other protocol) only the DNS servers and not an IP address?

Politics / Elections
November 09, 2005, 12:38 AM
What does everyone think? In California, it looks like every measure on the ballot is going to be defeated. The election is now a costly, unnecessary paper weight. I see in Virginia Kaine won, even with Bush back his opponent. Red turning blue?

Battle.net Bot Development / Warden
September 12, 2005, 07:23 PM
Has anyone seen Warden active lately? I have been packet logging for the past couple of days but so far nothing. I am trying to research these packets along with the file it supposedly downloads, but it is difficult when I have no data to work with.

General Discussion / Return to Flight
July 13, 2005, 11:48 AM
Space shuttle Discovery lifts-off today @ 3:51 EDT after a 2 year hiatus. I remember watching NASA TV in the early morning hours and saw the shuttle actually stop in its place on the little display they had up when Columbia disintegrated. Just listening to the flight director keep asking the Columbia crew if they could hear him was so agonizing, then the bad news start to pour in. If you don't have NASA TV on your cable, you can stream it over the internet (www.nasa.gov has links). Anyone else plan on watching the launch?

General Discussion / SHA1 Broken
February 15, 2005, 08:46 PM
SHA1 has been broken according to this blog (Bruce Schneier)?  Looks interesting although there are little details other than a recent paper on a collision which this attacks supposedly builds upon.  Found this blog post on Raymond Chen's blog where I also saw, of all people, Skywing.

Politics / Free Market vs Socialism

Like freemarket is oppression?

The majority of people in a free market are oppressed.  The rich get richer and the poor poorer.

Battle.net Bot Development / Bot Plugin System
November 22, 2004, 04:34 PM
So as to not clutter DecA's topic, I have created my own:

I have a C# bot which connects only as Warcraft3/TFT using my C# version of iago's java code.  It doesn't really do anything except have a really robust plugin system.  I ported all the plugins from my old chat bot.  The really cool plugins let you play zork over battle.net, talk to my Alice AI plugin, or write simple text "scripts".  The more mundane ones implement a GUI for chatting, etc.

Hoozah.

Mind explaining how your robust plugin system works?  I have been thinking about a plugin system for sometime and have yet to find a system I like.  Any others are welcome to input their systems as well.

Politics / Republican's at it again
November 02, 2004, 02:53 PM
So here at Dartmouth most all students get little flyers telling us to vote in New Hampshire becuase it is a swing state.  Of all the pamplets I have received, the Republican ones are the worst.  On one side they have a information about Bush and his policies and how he is a great guy and such.  And on the other side, they have warnings essentially telling us not to vote in New Hampshire because there could be dire consequences.  Among these they list: loss of scholarships (The College has agreed to cover any loss scholarships even though very few are affected), you will have to obtain a driver's license in New Hampshire (even if you don't drive!), your health insurance will be cancelled and your income tax will be affected as well.  These are obvious scare tactics while I have seen the democrats do nothing but stand on the corner of our 3 street lights and quietly hold signs.

Battle.net Bot Development / Anti-Flood Algorithm
August 30, 2004, 04:59 AM
I remember talks of Warcraft III having a good built-in anti-flood algorithm.  Has anyone got around to reversing it?  Or, has anyone done some more analysis and have any more information regarding an efficient anti-flood algorithm?

Anyone know anything about them?  I'm thinking about investing in one so I can watch TV for the little time that I am in my dorm room.

Gaming Discussion / Demos
August 02, 2003, 11:58 PM
I don't know if this is on-topic or not, but does anyone have any good information about the half-life demo format?  I've searched google and found that it is a heavily modified quake I format; which does me no good.
