Title: Wireless Networking
Post by: KrisL on September 04, 2004, 07:23 PM
So uhh, ive got 3 cat 5 cables running to all corners of my house and im getting tired of tripping on them.  I'm considering switching to wireless networking.  I'm looking at setting up a linksys system.  Has/Does anyone use wireless networking, and if so, can you post any tips/advice/concerns you have about it?

Im looking at buying one of these:

and 3 of these:

The network is primarily for shared internet, with minimal file sharing, and im running a cable line right now, which I get approximately 3.5mbp/s downstream on.

Thanks in advance!

I have a dlink router and we had to move it around a bit because when it was next to some electronic devices it seemed to be causing interfearence (cordless phones). Check to make sure your phones and router have frequencies that are far about.

Wireless technology is awful.  WEP (Which is "Wired Equivolance Protocol") isn't encryption, and can quickly be broken.  You can program it to only work with certain mac addresses, but it's not hard to spoof your mac/brute it.  If you have wireless, be prepared for horrible security concerns.

WPA is a little better I believe.

I've never liked my wireless network, and if you're house is big.. you may need to invest in some antenna's as well.. also, for file sharing... don't expect high transfer rates.. because the farther you are from your router, the lower the speed.

So basically.. either go out and buy some sort of covering for your wires.. or have a lot of money to spend on a potential headache. :P

I use an IPSec L2TP VPN using certificates for my wireless traffic at home; no security problems there.
