Title: Internet Explorer 6.0
Post by: Sargera on August 30, 2004, 09:18 AM
At random times (not very often) I'm browsing the Web on IE 6.0, and then it just freezes, and I have to close it.  When I try to open it again, it doesn't open, but it shows a process of it in the task manager, but it's not listed as a running application.  Then what seems to follow is that explorer.exe crashes, forcing me to have to reboot.  Anyone know the solution to this problem?  Do you need more information?  Does this happen to anyone else?  Etc.

I think it's just a bug with IE. That happens to me from time to time when IE freezes, but when explorer.exe crashes it usually recovers itself.

/me waits for a flood of "Don't use IE" posts. :P

Why am I not surprised?

To check whether the problem is IE's fault:

If the problem persists, it is IE's fault.

What shitty Windows-ME OS are you using that causes you to reboot if explorer.exe crashes?  Explorer tends to run fairly well in its own process space.  Just load up Task Manager, and Run... a new instance of c:\windows\system32\explorer.exe or (if you ARE using Windows Me) c:\windows\explorer.exe.

Windows Server 2003.  Basically the start menu and task bar becomes unresponsive, and then all of the icons/text fade out with solid white.  I tried waiting about 10 minutes for it to recover, then ended the explorer process, then I had to reboot.

I still say using Internet Explorer is "foolish", and I stand by it. :P

Try Windows updates, seeing as IE is part of the windows package they do put some level of upgrades in with that. Or.. if I dont know anything and they dont, there must be IE updates, check that out. And if that all fails... Mozilla Firefox pwnz all web browsers. Its just alittle bit slower than IE.

How can you people tell IE is slower than firefox or any other browser? I'm on a crappy ass computer and I see no difference.
The updates for IE are built into the windows updates.

I'm on a good computer, and the difference between IE and Opera is huge. When going back a page, Opera is instant, IE takes a few seconds. When loading the next page, Opera loads in half the time (not completely, just the page content, it takes longer than IE for it to go to the correct post).

We know everything is instant for you on any intel or microsoft product. BLah blah blah. What I was saying is it's instant on any of the major browsers as far as I see. And like I said I'm on a slow ass computer so I don't see how anyone who probably has double, triple, but most likely quadruple the processor speed I have can see any kind of pause in any of the three products.

Nope.  There's some things from Microsoft that I don't really like/think needs to be improved.

There really isn't much of a speed difference, its just that other browsers have so many more features than IE.

On my work computer (2.8ghz) they all feel the same.  But on a slower computer, Opera is definately much faster (because of the way it does caching) and FireFox/ie are basically the same.

What I noticed about using a fast computer is that some Microsoft stuff (like hitting "reply" or "new message" in Outlook) still takes about 5 seconds.  I don't understand how brining up the send message form could take a long time.

Features such as?  (other than download managers and built-in popup blockers).  I'm sure IE7 will have the features that are important though.  :)

My favourite feature is not getting viruses.

But I also like plugins.  I have a whole pile of plugins for Mozilla, and I have problems living without mouse gestures.  I also enjoy "nuke anything" for when assholes screw up the tables, looking up selected word in a dictionary, website previews in google, and always allowing rightclick, even on sites that disable it.  I have those and more on firefox on linux and windows.

I totally missed tabbed browsing.  That's definately a plus.

The only thing I miss from IE is alt+d to get to URL bar.

http://texturizer.net/firefox/keyboard.html Good comparision of IE, Firefox and Opera keyboard shortcuts.  When I first heard about Firefox I was reluctant to change because of compatibility with sites and such and me believe tabbed browsing wasn't such a big deal.  Now that I have been using  a lot more, I really love tabbed browsing.

IE has a builtin popup blocker now. You just have to download sp2.
