Title: Paypal Fraud
Post by: Fr0z3N on August 11, 2004, 11:20 AM
There are fake E-MAils going around.

Here the TEXT:

Dear *your e-mail adresse registered by PayPal*,

We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your PayPal account may
have been accessed by an unauthorized third party. Protecting the security
of your account and of the PayPal network is our primary concern.
Therefore, as a prevention measure, we have temporarely limited access to
sensitive PayPal account features.
Please click on the link below to confirm your information:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run

For more information about how to protect your account, please visit
PayPal's Security Center, accessible via the "Security Center" link located
at the bottom of each page of the PayPal website.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your
assistance in helping us maintain the integrity of the entire PayPal
system. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

The PayPal Fraud Management Team

If you click on the LINK it will open a FAKE PAYPAL Site and ask you to reenter all your Information including Creditcard , Password and PIN.

THIS IS A SPOOF AND A FAKE.

PayPal also never adresses you by the E-MAIL Adress you are registered with , theyre MAils always start:
DEAR * First and Last Name*

I called PayPals Support Number and asked them how my Account could be used by 3rd Party and they told me right away to change my PASSWORD and nott fillin any Information of Bank or Creditcard.

Just wanted to pass this along to all the Members using PayPal.

I think I got scammed yesterday.  Somebody said, "Damnit, I'm short $3 on paypal, now I have to write a cheque" and I said, "I'll send it to you!" and I sent it.  Social engineering sucks :(

I cancelled my PayPal account while I still had my money.  PayPal is notorious for locking accounts with money in them for almost any reason, then setting up impossible layers of obstruction to get your money back.  Most people just give up and let them keep the money.  It is well documented by ex-employees and people who were ripped off.

That wouldn't have happened if you were in the States and the guy was forced to spell it "check."  The "que" makes it all attractive to his plight for you :P

That test is nonsense.  Two of the methods that I use, to determine whether or not an email is valid, cannot be tested with their quiz.  Since the links are disabled and I cannot view the entire message header, I stopped at #1 and declared "BullShit Alert" on the quiz.  Nice try but no monkey love for you.

Actually, the test is pretty straightforward.  The only thing you needed to know was whether or not the links pointed to where they claimed to point.  Often it was just one invalid link, which is how I determine whether or not an email is fraudulant.  Never been scammed yet :P

Ahhh, I see.  I keep forgetting that Windows / IE users need to examine every link before they actually click on it.  I like to go to the questionable site right away so I can see the goodies and enjoy exploring their security.

How about this: Delete them without reading. No respectable company would send an email like that.

Grok: I've heard that too. I withdraw everything from paypal as soon as I get it.

My account was limited and I have been trying to get it back for 2 months now, I figured they just hated me.
