I keep hearing about various figures, usually between 48 and 52 for this number.
Are only Israelis this stupid, or is this just not as common knowledge as I thought it was?
/rant
I thought it was 51
/me hides his Canadian face
There are 50 and only 50. Previous to WWII there were 48 but then Alaska and Hawaii were admitted to the Union. Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, etc. are just American territories.
QuoteAre only Israelis this stupid
Yes. :P
My ex argued and argued with me saying it was 52. I googled it and showed her and she still said there were 52.
Americans are this stupid too. One of our morning news shows has a segment called "one of our fifty is missing" and they tell stories about all the dumb people who think New Mexico is part of Mexico and not the US.
I've heard 50, 51, and 52 in different places -- I was never sure which was right, and I also didn't care enough to look it up :)
Well, I couldn't tell you how many Canadian or Mexican provinces there are. Does that make me stupid?
Mexico has provinces? hehe
31 states and 1 federal district: Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Colima, Distrito Federal*, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico, Michoacan de Ocampo, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro de Arteaga, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosi, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz-Llave, Yucatan, Zacatecas.
If its any consolation, Yoni. I have no idea what Israel even has, I know the name of 5 cities and thats it. :P
No. The United States of America consists of 46 states and 4 Commonwealths which include Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
Canada has jokingly been called the 51st state before. I guess they might joke like that about Mexico too.

We have half of the worlds mexicans here already, sure why not just make it a state too, or better yet, just call it southern california and all of present california northern california.
Or make it southern southern cali--
So-So Cal
(No offense to any Mexicans intended...)

No, I would think that's less common knowledge than the amount of USA states.

Israel doesn't have states. 5 cities is more than most people out of Israel know, probably. :)

No he's right. I live in
The Commonwealth of Virginia, but it's still considered a state. However, I suppose technically it isn't.
Canada has 10 provinces, from west to east:
BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick
And 3 territories, from west to east
Yukon, North West Territories, Nunavet
Now gogo name the states in order without looking ;)
Why are there 50 stars on the flag then? They've always tauhgt us that there are 50 states not 46 states and 4 commonwealths.
I looked it up commonwealth is just another word for state:
http://www.webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=commonwealth (http://www.webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=commonwealth)
Commonwealths must be states or they wouldn't be granted state's rights. (eg: Puerto Rico?).
http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761562626/Puerto_Rico.html
QuoteSince 1952 Puerto Ricans have debated whether the island should remain a commonwealth, attempt to become the 51st state of the United States, or become an independent nation. Puerto Rico has held a number of referenda on this issue. The vast majority of voters remain closely split between commonwealth status and statehood.
Let's clear things up.
There are indeed, 50 states; the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, and Hawaii. Then there is Washington D.C, (the District of Columbia), which is the national capital. There are also several US territories, which are not states. They do not have representatives in the US House of Representatives or the US Senate (AFAIK) and do not vote for president or vice president, although they are technically US Citizens. These territories include Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Phew.
Edit: Apparently I do not know far enough ;)
Quote
... a nonvoting resident delegate represents Puerto Rico in the House of Representatives...
Apparently Peurto Rico is considered part of the US even though they're a territory. I thought being a territory just meant you had protection and stuff by us, US benefits without being part of the US (ie: a state.) However, on my VB.NET package it says "Made in USA (Puerto Rico)" :-\

My friends and I learned this song - yes it's really a song - in third grade. Good times... :-[
Since the US has such screwy states I'm giving myself some leniency on West to East... Then again there are 50 compared to 10, so screw iago. :P

OMG. I lived in the USA in 5th grade and learned this exact song there. I've known the states in alphabetical order ever since. I can still sing it (though you can't make me).
Back to israel, israel has a population of about 5 million just and about 4.5 million people who hate them and they are surrounded by another 300 million people who hate them. Atleast they have a lot of guns.
And the best helicopter fleet in the world.

I personally like the romen noodles (assumeing they are from there) and the pepper steak is delightful. AC130 specter gun ships rock, a big cargo plane with howitzers and mini guns sticking out the sides.
50 states. If you or somebody you know lives within the borders of the US and thinks otherwise then they are stupid. I'm sorry.
