Title: Favourite new piece of hardware.
Post by: cefx- on May 29, 2004, 11:23 PM
What's YOUR favourite new piece of hardware?

Anything from the latest released technology, to the latest technology still underwraps (NDA - Non-Disclosure Agreement).

I'd have to say that my favourite hardware would be a Wireless USB hub, or the AMD 64 FX-5* processors.  (I'd say the AMD 64 Socket 939 processors, but I honestly think that's a myth AMD will never follow through with on production.)

You?

My optical mouse. Of all things I notice when using another computer, it's whether or not the mouse has 5 buttons and is optical.

I am sorry, I could never pay that much on a video card, I draw the line. That card is pretty damned insane with its 16 pipes, but thats a little much. In a month the x900 or whatever is comeing after it will be out. Nvidea and ati release cards so regularly you will never have the best and newest for long. My practice is try to get was best  at the moment and keep it for a long time because it will be good for a while. Actually i never buy what is top nigtch the best, but the second best or whatever because the price is down. Like now is the time to buy a 9700pro all in wonder or xt.

Well, you can look at online stores (if you can't find them you shouldn't be using a computer), ebay, go to a real store, ask people...

Way to contradict yourself, willy. You, as well as quite a few of the others here do not thouroughly understand what a video card is used for. I got my 9700 during the summer for $450 canadian, and since, I have not had any problems playing any of the newest games on the market. I've gotten star wars galaxies, UT2003/04, BF1942(borrowed), warcraft 3, and numerous other graphic intensive games.

To a gamer, the video card is just as important as your computer. If you play counterstrike, starcraft, or everquest, you have no need to update your graphics card, because it won't help. However, if you are playing UT2004, you can't have lag or you get your brains blown out as soon as you spawn because of lag.

When will I have to upgrade my card? Maybe next summer, that's 2 years. My computer will need an upgrade before that.

That's the same game I seem to be running without lag with a radeon 9000, hrmm...

edit: mangled the word "radeon"

Great.  Play against Hostile and his 9800 XT Pro 256MB.  His FPS is probably >10x yours.  Then we can redefine "without lag".

Dude, If I bought a 9700 now I still would have quite a bit of time before I need an upgrade. I am still doing find on a ti. I play mohaas, halo, quake3 bfvietnam and many other games, and when I upgrade it will not be on the newest card because I am not going to spend 400 bucks, I have to buy gas, pay for insurance, and other sutff. I do not have that extra 200 to 150 b ucks to spend on such a vanity item as a top end card that will get me no where because none of the games require that yet and will not require that for quite some time. I can buy a 9700 now for a lot less then it would have cost me say 6 months ago and still be a lot better for time to come. But would I buy an x800? No, No chance in hell. Its a nice card but it is accessive.

I don't think that's really accurate. If Hitmen says he's experiencing lag-free play, he probably has at least 25 fps. Hostile then has 250 fps. With 250 fps, the delay between frames is 4 ms. With 25 fps, the delay is 40 ms. The delay due to ping is likely to be 100 ms or more, making their difference in graphics speed a minor part of the total delay?

I have a 2215 it's kinda cool. My roommate has a 5550 and its badass. Fingerprint security and wireless ethernet built in. I haven't gotten to play with it that much except when I set up the network.
My other roommate has a t1110 tablet which is pretty cool too. I'm stuck with this crappy box since I'm poor but ohwell.
