The better ones are #1 (lacking some smoothness), #4 (though I'm guessing you didn't draw the creature), #10 (would be better without text).
#5 looks one of the images that those anti-robot verification scripts make (where you have to type a number or a string, and you get an image where it's human-readable but not easily machine-readable).
#7 is painful to look at.
#11 has potential to be awesome. (Without the silly text.)
I don't do graphics myself, but I'll send NC a link to this thread (I have lots of his work on my HD but don't want to post in his name).
Yes, I don't think the one with the creature counts :)

That's simple, both of you seem to use the same basic idea: either take a picture or pictures you didn't create that look cool, and then type some text next to them; or type some text, add 3-4 filters, *maybe* move a layer, and call it masterful.
I don't mean to be all flamey but it really bothers me when people call either using other's work and adding a word to it or clicking 'OK' on a built-in filter "making art".

Mitosis #14 -- My new background.
Well, I'm no artist, but here's an example of what I would consider my art form:
I miss backstabbing, I'm almost considering digging up my Starcraft disk :)
J0k3r #1 and 2 6/10. Generaly they are ok but I think you could add a lot more to them. They look somewhat plain.
Mitosis all your work 3/10, In my opinion.

You're right to some degree. But almost all art is based on something, even abstract. What Spht did with the Halloween logo is quite a distance from the original, as to be considered unique. He probably had to throw away dozens of attempts, as artists often do, until it has the right look and feel. I think he did great.
Someone opening Photoshop and drawing freehand is your only idea of digital art? What if they used the font tools, filter tools, effects? At which point are any of those the artists own creation? I'm not attempting to counter-flame, but want to point out that being critical exposes your own critique to criticism :p or something. hehe

Spht and I talked at length about this on MSN, and I told him his Halloween logo was good. I don't think only freehand is art, I was trying to say I don't think writing "Mitosis" next to a render made by Blizzard, or by writing "Graphic Designer" with the wind filter applied, over a background with something like difference clouds, glass, lens flare filters applied, is art. If I take the Mona Lisa, and write SOULTAKER on it, did I really create great art?

a) I don't want a kid
b) I am a kid.. well, almost.

This is my first attempt at Pixel Art, I tried to make a house that says Valhalla Legends across the side of it. It's crappy in my opinion :-\ If anyone wants the PSD, I'll send it.
The house itself looks awesome, but the text does indeed need improvement.
How do you do those pixel art things anyway? I saw a tutorial once, but it only showed how to make a scanned image in pixel art and that didn't work anyway. Besides, it sucked.
And iago: I meant the first option. Why, don't you want to be the father of our children? ::)
Edit:
Soul Taker, I was too lazy to make it match the circumference, but basically I'd just use dodge and burn on the label. Maybe one day =)
It's not very hard I just used Photoshop 7.0 and used zoom, and made it pixel by pixel.
That last one by Mitosis titled "wires" or something is real nice. I like it.

But with photoshop it's so easy to pump out works in 2 minutes each! :)

I just finished a sig (well, it's cropped from a larger image I've been working on for the last couple days) for a dark, kind of gothy site (I dislike goths, but they have some cool discussions). I don't like it as it's not my usual style and it's so trendy, but I figured I should at least show something, neh?

The thing is, we're talking about my opinion on art, not a universal objective definition. So debating won't really get us anywhere :P
I agree that taking a pre-rendered image (Mitosis #4) and putting your name on it is not art, however using photoshop filters and etc. at least require a bit of effort.

My site is completed now, www.Savage-Designs.tk
Version 2 is finaly complete! After tedious hours working on this it is finaly done! It may not be too complicated, but I am very pleased with what I did. There are a few bugs though, Im in the process of fixing my forum link. Well, you can view our (Voodooism and I run it) site at www.Savage-Designs.tk
Please respond to this, Im very interested in everyones opinnions.

Did you pass grade 2 english?
Home page -- "feal" - "feel"
Contact us page -- "feal" - "feel"
Talents page -- "W" - "We"
"Afflicates" -- "afflicate" - "affiliate"
And the forums link only works when you are on the talents page.
The site design is good, clean and organized, however it loads very slowly and choppy, and I'd recommend centering the whole page so it doesn't only display on the left side of the page on higher resolutions. Images will also drain your bandwidth faster than text, and it's kind of annoying to have the "save picture" option come up when you stall over the pictures. I'd also recommend that if you're going to take this serious, skip a day of mcdonalds and get a real domain, I know people (myself included) that would never trust something out of a .tk.
Like I said, there are several bugs in it. Thats why Im getting your opinnions so that I can fix it. And I cant purchase shit online so getting a .com at the moment is useless.
BTW I have spelling problems.

Thanks for the compliment. Definitely the best abstract art I have ever created. I am going to work on creating more similar to it so I can get the techniques I used down. Once I get it all figured out I will post a quick tutorial on how I did it if you are interested.
I like what Tuberload did. ABSTRACT_2.jpg would make interesting background if rendered 1600x1200. Possible to render larger without losing detail (not just resize)?

I rendered it to a larger size to fit my background and didn't loose as much detail as just resizing it did. It just got a little grainy in some spots.
I resized it using Photoshop 6.0 and just changed the image size properties. If anyone knows of a better way to resize it without the loss of detail please let me know. I am by no means an expert with graphics, I am just learning.
Otherwise I can just create a few new ones at different sizes, and if you want Spht I can do one at 1600x1200. It might not look exactly the same, but it would be very similar.

Logically, there is no good way of resizing digital images to prevent quality loss. Per-pixel detail will always turn into X-pixel detail. I never used Photoshop, but in 3D Studio you can adjust the dimensions you want your image to be rendered at. No quality is losed during this process.
If the only method you have in rescaling your image is by running a resize algorithm on it then it's not worth it -- pixels will just be stretched and fine detail becomes large blobs.

You should have seen the original background I made for myself. This is ten times better, but you are right it is not quite as good. If I figure out a better method of changing the size I will repost.
Addition: I think the picture looks pretty good, I am wondering if maybe some of the distortion comes from it being stretched from 400x400 to 1600x1200, which is not proportional? Definitely something I will look more into.

No, infinitely many jazillion. The ratio between any few jazillion and infinity is zero.
Wrong, jazillion is not a number or a word and I can therefore use it how I please, I use it as another word for infinity.

It's the way the word has to be used.
There are a few infinites.
Cardinal infinity, which is the smallest infinity.
Continuum, which is slightly (infinitely) bigger.
Etc. There are infinite such infinities, none of which are called "jazillion".
One of the undecidable ZF axioms states there's no infinity between Cardinal and Continuum.
The infinities were categorized by Cantor, who was a Jew.

The planet probably looks too large for the rings, you're used to seeing (insert the name of the planet after jupiter, I forget). There are, in fact, large planets with rings.
The ring seems to get thinner near the front, and it looks like there's a few too many stars, but really nice once again. I'd also recommend allowing more light on the planet, otherwise it's 75% black, and sort of dull. At that distance you should still be able to make out some detail on the planet, even if the main source of light isn't shining directly on it (ever see the moon at night through a telescope?).
I have been working on this for a couple days. Doing the actual work isn't hard, but planning the layout can get a bit tricky.

I have been working on this for a couple days. Doing the actual work isn't hard, but planning the layout can get a bit tricky.

[EDITED]
No offense, mitosis your layout is ugly.
I'm sure he appreciates your expert opinion. Mitosis, make sure to add mouseovers for the links so it looks like they pop out a bit when you mouse over, or do some sort of highlight, your layout has potential. What's the "A" on the left side all about though?
Edit: And thank you Akamas, for including that huge image in the quote.
Heh "expert opinion"? I'm the one whos been coding all his fricken layouts. He comes to me when he wants them coded, he wouldn't know how to do a rollover if someone told him.
Actually I don't get offended when Akamas tells me that I'm doing something wrong. He teaches me and all so I don't really get pissed.

Lucky for him he has a student that allows him to fuel his ego at the same time.

Took a screenshot while I was in Warcraft 3 : The Frozen Throne and then messed around with it in Photoshop. I think it looks cool lol.
When I first saw that I was like "whoaaaaaaaaaaaa that's sweet", then read it started from a screenshot and lost the respect I had from a second before. It looks really cool, too bad you didn't make it yourself.
That does not look appealing. The colors don't mix well. Especially the green and the purple.
Quite retro in my opinion with the Teal colors.

The first part is right, however the rest of the sentence is completely wrong :P
Computer translators mess everything up. :-\

No, it got the first part of the sentence right. The reason the rest didn't translate is because languages are not exactly alike, and phrases often come out different when being translated. A computer won't know how, but a person would be able to use the equivalent phrase in the given language.

Well actually some European languages are alike, such as Italian and Francais.
Anyways this is the recent Barrie Paint Ball website I made, what do you guys think.

Its the same style as any of your other layouts, I don't like it at all, Sorry.
Well it definitely looks like a layout, not much to it though.
Hey, neither of these are new, or to complicated. However I'm bored and thought they looked sort of neat, feel free to poke and prod any aspect of them, learn from my mistakes :)

Mmmm those look like wallpapers taken and modified from http://www.themexp.org . This is one that I saw on themexp.
http://www.qedft.com/w4V3s.jpg <- Looks DAMN close to the first one.
Looks like he used that wallpaper and used the burn tool to darken. :-\
no, but it's a common technique, i can link you to a tutorial :)
nothing special lol
-also, in the themexp link, 4 points lead into the center, I have much more, among other differences
Nate you showed me those like last year lol
My mistake, they just looked similar ;-)

took a 68' Camaro made it into cell shading/cartoonie look or what ever. Made the background.
used the mrmen.com (http://www.mrmen.com) Create-a-Mr-Man option to create a MrMan.
That is the sweetest thing I have ever seen.
My MrMan would kick your MrMan's ass with his godly jesusflower of doom.

It just looks to me like it's low-color, which I don't like. The background looks good, though :)
I am getting rid of cLite. I like this

I like it too.
Mmm interesting idea "shadow works", but since your using the word "shadow" it would look much better if you used a darker theme.

Too cliche IMO. What he has now looks original. Oh, and he doesn't visit this forum anymore :P
Howdy,
Some of you know the vL dude named zef, who has for the most part fallen off the face of the earth...(though I do know where to find him, I think..)
His art is truly art.
Check it out.

Horus and For the Heart are my favourite...
I lost his site with all his artwork though. :(
He's pretty bad ass. Horus doesn't look like it's done on a computer it looks like it's made out of a metal.

Looks like you just used the Cutout filter.

Interesting point, but I feel calling it shadow whatever, and using light pastel colors would just be a bad combo.

I think they call that vectorizing.

Yes but I doubt he did that himself. Using the photoshop filter is easier.
Umm... no shit, you have to use the filter to get the "vectorizing effect". I didn't say you were incorrect, I was just stating what its name was.

He does his by hand using a digital pen and something. Sometimes scans things in and then makes art out of it
I forgot which one he did, but one of them was a ciggerette scanned in and then modified into art.

You can do vectorizing by hand, you don't need a filter to do it.
Obviously everything that an algorithm can do a human can do, and most of the times better by avoiding patterns.
QuoteYou can do vectorizing by hand, you don't need a filter to do it.
Why the hell would you even post that? Obviously you can do vectorizing by hand, much prefer the filter because then you don't have to waste the time.

Wow, chill out. You must have some grudge against me, yet I do not even know who you are. Look at your prior post, "you
have to use the filter to get the "vectorizing effect"." Perhaps that is some justification to my post?
No I have nothing against you, and I understand that the filter isn't required but inorder to create the effect properly you have to use the filter. Most photoshop artists can't create the effect from just using the tool palatte.

Maybe that means most Photoshop artists are not really artists?
Soloar Voyager (http://www.solarvoyager.com/) is an excellent site I found if any of you are into Celestial Art. They have a very good forum community, and a lot of tutorials/tips/tricks available to the aspiring celestial artist.
Sounds and looks intersting, I'm going to check that out.

In the forum check out the artwork gallery to see some of the work they have done. Of course some is better than others because it is an open forum, but there is some really nice stuff.
For content I give it a A+, but from looking at its layout it isn't very eye catching and I hate the idea of a splash page.
Very interesting artwork, very realistic. :)

I rarely look at the actual web site, and I didn't know about the splash page until I retrieved the link for the thread. The biggest plus for me is the tutorial and forum content. The tutorials are nice and unique. The forum is full of people who are positive and wanting to help. You don't have to be scared posting first timework there. You will get positive uplifting feedback, a plus imo. Plus the artwork is very provocative.
