Title: Comcast high speed internet restrictions...
Post by: Tuberload on March 27, 2004, 09:07 PM
Does anyone else here use Comcast as a high speed ISP (cable)?

All it allows me to do is browse the web. I can't connect to anything using telnet/ftp/etc... So that throws web development out the window unless they provide a means of uploading files through a web browser. I can only connect to Battle.net with there clients, but not mine. I find this very annoying because it has restricted the development of some of my projects to my intranet.

The main problem is they are the only provider for cable internet in my area, and price wise DSL does not compare to the download/upload speeds of cable.

Do you think being a web/software developer would be a good enough argument for getting these restrictions lifted, or at least reduced?

You can connect to Battle.net with the official clients but not with emulated clients? Sounds very fishy.

What exactly are there clients? Do they have custom b.net clients? Are you using a proxy server? Did they install a firewall or other software on your computer? Do you have proxy settings in IE?

By there clients I mean Blizzard games themselves, i.e. Diablo II.

I was only required to use a proxy server when setting up my cable modem, but do not use one right now.

There was no software that I am aware of installed, but I could be wrong. I will check more into that.

I have been spending the past few weeks trying to figure out how they let me run some internet programs but not others, and I am yet to figure it out.

I have Comcast HSI and I have no restrictions like that.

Update:

I have virus/trojan scanned the death out of my computer with no bad results.

I have rebooted with only the required system processes running.

I haven't found any setting's that would restrict me.

I am about to just reformat since my computer needs it anyways. Maybe that will fix something I have missed.

I was wondering if maybe they were restricting me from a remote location, but other Comcast users say they don't have these problems. I have also contacted Comcast and the CSR guy couldn't help me, so I might call back and ask for someone who can.

I've noticed Comcast blocks the BitTorrent ports...but that's it.

Those bastards.

Because you don't need to accept incoming connections in order for it to work.

My problem is for example they will let me connect to battle.net with official blizzard games but won't let me connect with any third party programs. I can browse the web with IE, but can't use a telnet client.

I figured they would have to have something on my computer to stop that but I havn't been able to find anything. It's rather anoying and kind of pisses me off.

Regardless...you don't need to accept incoming connections.

Sorry for bringing up an old post but I fixed the problem and wanted to share my results.

It was a client side issue. I had something running that the POS Norton didn't pick up. I wouldn't recommend that AV to anyone.

Aha, Norton is very popular, but not that good. It's over rated.  :-\
