Building your own computer would much more cost-effective than paying $1100 for that Gateway. x86 PC hardware is not hard to work with, from start to finish it should take you no more than an hour.

At any rate, though, congratulations :P

I know how to install ****ing windows Xp or operating systems, like I stated before, when I would pop the cd in, it wouldnt install!
Just because my computer wouldnt install it doesnt mean I dont know how, and I know I dont know shit about programming or alot about comps, but Im just saying I do know how to install an OS.

As we tried to explain to you, the reason it wouldn't install when you 'popped the CD in' is because you were not setting your boot order to CD before HDD-0.  You stated to DarkVirus that you "did not know how to do that".

Most all BIOS can be entered by pressing either the DEL key or F2 key at the appropriate time.  This "time" is prior to the OS beginning to load and usually right after you see the video card logo/name flashed on the screen.

Popping your CD in while Windows XP is already running isn't going to do jack.

You need to put it in, shut the CD door, shut down the computer, let it power off, (by the way, the WinXP CD should still be in the drive).  Now power it up, and when it starts looking for a bootable device, it will start with CD (assuming you made those BIOS changes AND SAVED THEM), and display a message like ...

"Press any key to boot from CD...."

If you press a key, WIndows XP will start loading from the CD.  If you don't press a key, the system will move on to the next bootable device (HDD-0 probably).

You absolutely to not need to waste $1000 on a new computer.

What you need to do is pay me $250 for this tech support session.  YOU SAVE $750.00 !!

Invoice Amt:  $250.00

Plug and Play I think. Like I knew what you guys were saying, but I couldnt find it under the BIOS so I thought I did something wrong.

*Sigh*

Don't get a FX 5200. If you want an FX get at least a 5600. The entire Ti 4x00 series will outperform the 5200 and for the same price (or less).

I have little confidence that Mitosis has actually gone into his BIOS settings.  When asked what his BIOS version number is, his reply was Plug and Play.  Since I'd really like to see him save his money, and since he and I apparently have a communication gap, maybe someone else can help him differently, with more success.

There's no reason why he has the only PC in the world that won't boot to CD.  Someone help him.

I have actually had a computer that wouldn't boot to cd, and it was incredibly annoying.  However, that was an olde 486, and I don't think a P3 would change that.

Mitosis - when you boot the computer, it'll say "Press <F1> to enter Setup" or "Press Del to enter setup" or something like that.  Do you see it?

Great.  Swap #2 and #3 by using the down arrow and select then, press ENTER and change the list to:

1) Removable Device = [Disabled]
2) Atapi CD-ROM = [Atapi 44xCDROM]
3) IDE Hard-Drive = [WDCWD400BB-00DEAO]
4) Other Boot Device = [INTI8Device(Network)]

also change:

Plug and Play O/S = [Yes]
Reset Configuration = [Yes]
Boot Up Floppy Seek = [Disabled]

NOW:  Put your Windows XP into the CD drive.

SAVE AND EXIT those changes.  System will reboot.

As it boots up, it will say "press any key to boot from CD..." press a key!

Windows XP setup will load from the CD drive.  When it gives you the option, delete the existing partition and install XP into the unpartitioned space, with NTFS.

Go go!

So, what, when class ends you have to hurry up to the next one?
What if the next one's at the other edge of school?
Do you get time to eat? Or are you forced to starve?

Generally get about 30 minutes to eat so its hardly a factor of that and on top of that usually get 5-10 minutes between classes.

It's the same in Canada. You have 5 minutes to get to the next class, no matter where it is. Recess is usually 1 hour long in between periods 2 and 3.

We had recess (2 15 minute breaks) from grade 1 - 6.  Since then, we've had 1hr lunch breaks and not necessarely 100% filled time table.
Title: Re:My new comp Im getting

I think I had at least 3 free periods a week the first three years of high school, and maybe 8 a week (2 a day / none one day) senior year.  If that's not recess, I don't know what is.
Title: Re:My new comp Im getting
Post by: Yoni on November 19, 2003, 05:24 PM
Hmm, apparently I'm unaware of the correct definition of recess.
My definition is "a break between two consecutive classes".
So according to the previous few posts you do have recess, even if it's a crappy 5 minute one.
Or am I wrong?

1 hour lunch breaks sound like halfway between amazing and a waste of time.
We don't have official "lunch breaks", the longest recess/break/whatever is 20 minutes.
Wait, you have a cafeteria, too, don't you? Capitalists. :)

In the future, when several people are telling you the same advice, if you're having trouble following it, the fault probably is with you, not with the advice.

Just thought of something funny.  Most of the time when several vL tell you to reformat C:, we're just messing with someone.  In your case we were actually trying to help!

Did I mention I bought an 80 gig drive for my system and I've only used about 17 gigs even when including all my software, developer tools, music, etc....  160 is definately a little excessive :)

Mitosis, remember what I said last night? You need to boot either using boot disks (Windows XP Professional) or from the cd so you can get to the setup screen. If you start the installation from inside Windows, you can only install a "fresh" copy of windows but not delete the old installation. For this reason you need to delete your partition (or thats what I always do, saves potential problems for later) by booting into the setup. If you don't, you will just get the same problem you recieved because the C: drive is still using temporary files and can't delete them. I can't seem to stress that enough to you :)

Grok, thanks alot for your help man I really apreciate it, I learned something new and I did it on my own (with your explanation of how, of course :)), well thanks again man.

I have renewed hope for you!

In the future, when several people are telling you the same advice, if you're having trouble following it, the fault probably is with you, not with the advice.

Just thought of something funny.  Most of the time when several vL tell you to reformat C:, we're just messing with someone.  In your case we were actually trying to help!

Grok, I think he was sucking up. :P

And recess, man, I haven't had that since 6th grade.

Do you have a playground?

8:30 - 9:55 (Class 1)
9:55-10:10 (Break)
10:15-11:30 (Class 2)
11:30-11:55 (Lunch)
12:00-1:45 (Class 3 )

1:45 (Senior release, I go home.)

Also, playgrounds rule, though we haven't touched ours since 6th grade...sigh.. the good ol' days of red rover.

I have 2 (full) 120Gb drives and I just added a 200Gb.

All you really need is about 30gb of hd space for most needs but once you install more the one OS, like keep just about everything and save tons of media (mp3s, movies) on top of games (basically excessive amounts of entertainment you quickly run out of space. On top of this 120 GB harddrive are only about $60 after mail in rebates so there isn't much reason to not keep all of this on on your computer.

I have 10gb on my laptop, which I usually use to hold 1-2 games and VS.net and other utilities/stuff.  I also have 40GB on my main computer which I use to hold anything big that I don't need at school/etc. (movies, mostly).

I tend to convert all my movies to VCD and burn them, though.  I need a DVD burner :)

Then you should get a smaller hard drive so you LEARN to delete everything properly. I find there is nothing worse than an 'Add/Remove Programs' list with 100 items, all of which were deleted through the C drive. Not to mention everything you leave behind, if someone got into your computer who knows what they could find.

Perhaps you are thinking of Intel's 80286, commonly called 286 for short?

That's what I think he mean.

And no, my other computer is a 500Mhz Celeron, which runs realllly well for the speed.

I honestly wouldn't recommend building it yourself with your knowledge of computers.  Even I wouldn't want to build one myself without learning more stuff about how it all fits together.

Its possible, there used to be quite some time back, judging the speed of his processor its even more likely but the main thing that doesn't add up is the number of dimm slots. 4 is standard in many computers however I have never seen a celeron chipset with 4 dimms. Whats more likely is:

A: He made a typo.
B: He doesn't know what hes saying.
C: He went to look up how much memory he had, it said that but he has shared memory for integrated graphics as well which very likely dedicated 8 MB of ram for his video.
