Title: 12-Year-Old Sued for Music Downloading
Post by: Thing on September 09, 2003, 09:36 AM
NEW YORK — The music industry has turned its big legal guns on Internet music-swappers — including a 12-year-old New York City girl who thought downloading songs was fun. (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,96797,00.html)

I guess that'll teach her a lesson!

Yes. How dare she attempt to rob the poor RIAA of $20? Off to jail with her!

(*wonders if the RIAA will attempt to instill a policy of chopping off the hands of children who try to "illegally" download music*)

From the Slashdot comments on the story:
"That's fine, I hope they start suing quadrapledgics & orphans too. And the Easter Bunny."

Seems fair.

Note that this now means that there will be common lectures in public pre-schools teaching young children the dangers of music piracy.

This is so freaking jacked up.  This is just an exploded version of what happens with tape recorders & VCR's, why not target the companies that build CD Burners, they are aiding in our fraudualent activities.

Yea, then we can sue maxtror and western digital for letting us store the files in the first place!

Does Fox News even try to hide their bias? This article reads, "The RIAA sued <gasp> a twelve year old girl. Yeah, a twelve year old girl! WTF are those bastards thinking?"

Look, the RIAA is going after people who are sharing large ammounts of files. This article is total bull; the mother claims that they were only downloading files to listen to, and then delete. The RIAA would never know of them unless they were sharing copyrighted songs, because it's "impossible at best" to tell what someone is downloading on kazaa due to the intentionally distributed layout. Furthermore, it is quite clear that they are going after, for the most part, the people who are sharing the most copyrighted materials.

There is a very distinct line between breaking the law, and pissing on it. I will admit, for example, that I did not purchase my copy of Windows: That's breaking the law. I do not, however, run a warez server offering my copy of Windows to anybody who happens upon it: That's pissing on the law.

In The Matrix, Thomas Anderson "[helped] his landlady take out her garbage." That doesn't make Neo any less of a hacker. Helping one's siblings with homework is hardly any different.

Clearly, this twelve year old girl was sharing enough files to catch the attention of the RIAA. I must congradulate Fox News, however, on an excellent job of portraying -- no, propogandizing -- this young thief as an innocent honors student who only had the Chile's Babyback Ribs song stuck in her head.

Worst part is, the girl's single mother was paying the Kazaa $29.99 fee; therefore, she thought she was paying for the music (like apple's iTunes - or napster's pay service) and was free to download the music without the bullshit of this goofy ass lawsuit
