Title: Tips for Getting Help on the Battle.net Development Forum
Post by: Grok on July 21, 2003, 06:46 AM
I've been viewing this forum a long time, so you might find these tips helpful to getting answers.  So many people have questions that you need to separate yourself from the *noise* and get noticed.  Here's how:

1)  Use ALL CAPS.  The regulars spend so much time programming and not enough time sleeping that they are very drowsy and cannot see the small caps.  You have to help them find your questions.

2)  Lots of exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!  Nothing emphasizes the fact that you need help more than everyone else than lots of attention grabbing !!!!!  Use liberally !!! throughout!!!! your!! questions!!!!

3)  The regulars are much more respective of internet gangstas so try to use 1337-speak.  This tells them that you are someone special, someone to be dealt with, and even feared.  The regulars will walk all over each other trying to help you.

4)  Cross-post to multiple forums.  Some of the people with the answers will have already read this forum by the time you post your question.  By posting your question in multiple forums, your question will be seen by more people, and that can only be a good thing.

5)  Offer something in exchange for the source code, like maybe some proxies or "illegals".  Something every battle.net bot programmer needs anyway, so why not trade yours for 1337-source code?

I'm sure other regulars can offer more suggestions.

9) Spend several hours thinking up a nickname, profile, signature and finding an avatar. After all that is like a first impression of who you are, and will get most of the regulars thinking all the more highly of you if you show such... devotion.

10) Get to know the regulars, follow them where ever they go, find out all their account names and add them to your friends list. If you find out they own a domain, make sure you do a whois off internic.net to find out even more information. If you get a full name and location, dont forget the yellowpages.com is at your service.

11) Let the regulars get to know you. The more personal your relationship with them gets the more they will respond to your questions. Tell them about what you did that day, how many women youve slept with, if youve never slept with any, goto calculator in Program Files and just hit a few buttons to make a number up. Make sure you dont leave out your amazing adventures, like how you just got out of jail this week, or how youre aunt is Charlize Theron.

Apparently I've slept with 3.141 women.  That 14% must be somebody who was either mostly a man, not all there, or who I didn't finish with.

I like the first thing Grok said about typing in caps, seeing as though I really am horribly sleep-deprived right now and it made me laugh :)

Preferably with poor grammar, in the wrong forums, and from multiple accounts.

18) Be Sure (When Actually Speaking In English) To Misspell Every OTHER Word Of Your Post. And If Someone Brings Up The Spelling Errors Blame It On Lack Of Sleep Because You Stayed Up For Three Days "Trying To Figure Out How To Do Something" Yet You Are Still Stumped And Are In Desperate Need Of Code.

That's almost ironic.

I think you're missing the point. No. 6 was made by me days ago. No. 23 was made recently. So, that lead me to make No. 25...

[EDIT] made no sense...

Or modify posts to make others look stupid.

Some people don't need help to do that.

Make sure rebundancy applies in all post that you compose.

ReBundancy is my word....its meaning is: having of or being excessevly stupid

For example, your signature:
QuoteC:\DOS
D:\DOS\RUN
RUN DOS, RUN

This *should* be more like:
QuoteC:\DOS\>
C:\DOS\>run
Run DOS, run!

However, you've managed to miss the command prompt entirely, and switch to the D: drive. Now if that's not excessively (note the correct spelling) stupid, I don't know what is.
