The note that the person left could mean one of two things. The first being that she was in love with the man she gave the ring to, and found herself heartbroken because he did not feel the same way. The second would be that her love had died, hence, "For my love is gone now," so she passes it on, using this gesture as a form of "letting go."

You really didn't read the article, did you? In case you didn't, here's a brief summary: A man leaves car unlocked at train station, and someone (I'm assuming a woman) puts a $15,000 engagement ring on the seat with a note attached, that hints that they are heartbroken.

It's not confrontation that the person is afraid of. The person just wanted to let go of her lost love, and apparently that ring is symbolic of that love of hers.
Of course this could end up like the story of the people who "found" the money while planting a tree and end up that the person stole the ring.
