What is the maximum length of the STRING field in this message? I'e forgotten.

Around 440ish, IIRC.  A long time ago I did some testing for Skywing before he disappeared and it turned out to be around there.  So if anyone wants to test this, start out with 400-length strings

Why even ask?  SID_CHATCOMMAND is binary protocol-specific.

The maximum length of a chat message is not protocol-specific, and the message length limit in CHAT might well be different to binary - in fact, I'm sure it is.

I tried to check it out on JBBE, but aparently the textbox control has a maxlen! =(!
