Title: Are you a programmer? -- Poll Remake

Thanks to Rule[vL] for allowing me to remake this.

Due to popular request, even though its against my beliefs, HTML is not a programming language here. -.-

I know Java.

It STILL sucks.

I know both C/++ AND Java, as well as Assembly.  I also know old-school BASIC.  I don't know what to pick!

Yup. You should make a poll where you can select multiple answers. Then have one language on each line. Best to have everything from Fortran to Python, though. People might get pissed if they can't choose Smalltalk or Algol68  ::)

That's closer to programming than HTML was.  :P

Yeah, I'd forgotten about ANSI SQL.  Good point up there.  ;)  Of course, I suppose you could say it's a query language.  *shrug*

Not necessarily.  Zend compiles PHP into executable-like files.

Just let people post what they program in, polls are useless.

C++
Intel assembly, loosely
Java
PHP
Delphi
Turbo Pascal :)

HTML <-- I say its a language. Hyper Text Markup Langage
C, C++, Assembly, Java, PHP, Delphi, C#, VB (all flavors except VBScript), other BASIC, Pascal, Ada, Python -- none of these have the word "Language" built into their names.  And yet they're still considered "programming" languages, with the possible exception of PHP, which is used for scripting.

But if you're going to qualify it by being a "Language," then I know Spanish, and can read French, Italian, and Portuguese.

I know (in order of comfort levels):
C#/VB.NET/J#
Java
JavaScript (again, scripting) in browsers, WSH, and IIS
C/++, in a pinch.
BASIC
Assembly, if I really have to

That's how I am. Once I got good with Python I stopped using Visual Basic 6/.NET altogether and I don't have any plans like I used to to learn C/C++.

Python is somewhat of a dead end though. It doesn't get you to assembler!

Also, as far as I can see, there's no cross-compiling python compiler written in python, so you can't port python to a new machine architecture, you always have to use C?

I'm sure someone has created a module for handling that kind of a procedure.

What are you talking about, Python is interpreted and runs on all the major desktop platforms, and many embedded and big iron ones, too. Not to mention with Jython and IronPython it runs everywhere Java and .NET runs, too.

Yes, it being an interpreted language and not a language close to assembler was what I meant. It's like javascript or php, ok for its purpose, but not something you write an OS from the bottom up in.

Yeah. You know what I'd like to see is a C-like language with a Python-like syntax.

Python sounds like a good language to develop in, just not system developing.

It truly is...especially for what a lot of you guys do (battle.net apps). It has incredible network and gui libraries, and you can distribute a graphical installer and exe file.

It seems to have a lot of libraries to help along the way. Any suggestions for an IDE?

I just use Pythonwin, but you might like boa-constructor (http://boa-constructor.sf.net). At school I use IDLE, which often gets the job done for me. For 90% of the things I do, IDLE suits my needs... I just prefer Pythonwin. I don't even use its debugger.

I use Pythonwin as well. For an interface I use wxPython. Even though with Boa you can drag and drop objects onto your program, I still prefer having to do all of that manually (setting item location, size, etc.).

I know these pretty well:

VB (like most people)
C and C++

I don't completely know these, but I'm familiar with them (I dabble a lot :P):

x86 Assembly (looking for a good tutorial!!! -.-)
SQL
J[ava][script] (die in a fire Java, DIE)
HTML
CSS
PHP

Compilers I used to make love to back in the day:
Borland C++ 3.1 (many good times we had together, ahh)
QuickBasic
QBasic (even though it was only an interpreter)
debug (the classic dos/windows assembler haha)
