Title: Looking for a Laptop
Post by: Networks on January 06, 2005, 09:04 PM
I am looking into buying a laptop mainly because I am not a hardcore gamer and I seem to get bored really quick especially on plane trips. Anyway I am looking for an awsome laptop but nothing as expensive as the Dell XPS which is around $4000. I am looking for something with a decent video card when I choose to game, at least 60GB of harddrive space. If anyone can find or help me into what laptops are good and which are bad I'd really appreciate it. :) Just inform me.

Also, you may want to get one that doesn't heat up too much or you may become infertile!  :)

Are refurbished ones good and are Intel Pentium M processors any good?

pentium M is good. I would take it over anything else. I have seen an amd laptop before... bad idea, the things go through batteries like a democrat goes through cocain (:D). Celeron is a little better power wise then some procs, but then it lacks the processing power of some other procs. Yes M seems to be the way to go.

My dad's laptop has a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 M, and it's slow as fuck. It seems slower than the 733MHz Pentium 3 in his tower!

Alienware laptops are good and they shouldn't be as expensive as that $4000 XPS.

Pentium M and Pentium 4 M are completely different. The Pentium 4 M is just a desktop processor crammed into a laptop, where if it is unplugged it has to clock itself way down as to not eat the hell out of your battery. The Pentium M is a low voltage processor designed specifically for laptops and gets much better performance for its clock speed than any P4.

What about  refurbished laptops, is it a good deal to buy them? And do you recommend buying a pentium M or something else?

Get a Pentium M. Some laptops have desktop processors in them that, although making it more powerful,  make it run hotter and more of a burden on battery life. I'd personally rather not buy a refurbished laptop, but there's nothing wrong with it. They're supposed to be at the same quality as when they were when they left the factory (assuming when it left the factory it wasn't dead :P) and you still get a warranty with them.
