General Discussion / IRC
April 13, 2007, 10:24 AM
Is there an IRC channel where people using these forums congregate? vL's one seems to have gone, irc.betaproductions.net is also down. I'm on IRC more often than I used to be -- would be nice to give it another go. An IRC channel for the boddev community (at least, those of us that rarely use Battle.net anymore) could be pretty cool.

A couple of queries:

- Can one copy users/groups/permissions from one windows server to another?
- Can one export lists of broadcast points and their settings from Windows Media Server to an installation of Windows Media Server on a different machine? If Windows doesn't do this would it be possible to write a tool to do it? Does anyone have experience administering WMS?

TIA!

The ix86ver authentication system, which implemented CheckRevision, has been modified by Blizzard. The new version is seemingly somewhat more secure since very little useful information has been made available since its implementation.

In order for BnetDocs to remain useful in the long term, this new system must be documented. Any useful information would, as always, be greatly appreciated. In particular, the following points need to be addressed:

* What is the overall approach taken by the new system?

* What algorithm(s) are implemented by the new challenge DLLs (lockdown-ix86-nn, psistorm-pmac-nn)?

* Pseudocode for these algorithm(s) should be published.

* How can the measures used to prevent these DLLs being called by third party applications be bypassed?

* What changes have been made to the BNCS protocol to support the new system?

If anybody is interested in contributing this kind of information, please post here. BnetDocs is still used by a large number of people, who will all no doubt appreciate your efforts!

Yoni's Math Forum / Ok, so here it is...
August 14, 2006, 10:55 AM
Arta is a maths retard. I haven't studied maths for 8 years, and even then, it was pretty basic. I've forgotten most of it. I have some old textbooks and have been looking at things (and doing reasonably well) but I need to brush up on my basics. Today I was adding polynomials and I forgot that a minus outside a bracket changes the signs inside the bracket: this is the kind of thing I mean! It drives me nuts that I forget these little things and thus, make stupid mistakes... especially on long problems where one gets something wrong at the beginning and then has to start all over again.

Does anyone know of some good (preferably online and interactive) resources I could use to brush up on these basics before I get back to the more interesting stuff?

Does anyone know of a good C# code analyser? Like CodeSurfer, but for C#.

TIA.

Advanced Programming / "Smart disassemblers"
March 31, 2006, 08:30 AM
This topic is intended only for people who have experience using disassemblers/debuggers.

What do you wish your decompiler could do that it doesn't? Do you often find yourself doing any kind of analysis that is routine, and that could perhaps be automated? What kind of information about disassembled code might you find useful that your disassembler doesn't currently provide?

What's your 'wish list' for a disassembler?

Don't feel the need to limit your answers to computationally feasible things. Do limit them, however, to the plausible :)

According to the ACLU, being offended == being injured.

Really? Got examples?

Have never heard anything much bad about the ACLU, would be interested in an opposing view.

Serious answers only please. I'm going to read some answers before I post my thoughts!

Discuss.

To Bush supporters: imagine Micheal Moore is president (what a horrible thought) while you're reading this.

This thread does not seem to have developed into a debate.

This topic has been moved to Trash Can.

How do you pronounce "Wijngaarden" (as in Adriaan van Wijngaarden)?

I'm trying to find out where the default operand size for an image is recorded in the .exe.

Background:

Instructions with immediate data generally have either 8, 16 or 32 bits of data encoded into the instruction. Instructions with 8-bits are easy to deal with, but 16/32 bit stuff is controlled by looking at a default operand size. This can be 16 or 32 bits. The size for the instruction is determined by checking for a prefix (0x66) which toggles the default.

Problem: the default size can be 16 or 32 bits, and I don't know where the default is specified. I suspect that IMAGE_NT_HEADERS.FileHeader.Characteristics (IMAGE_FILE_32BIT_MACHINE) is the flag that controls this, but I'm not sure: when I change that flag and disassemble the file in IDA, it still says "use32" in the segment data. It is of course possible that IDA means something else by 'use32'.

Anyway, if anyone can clarify, that would be splendid :)

I agree a bit, but not completely. You guys seem to think that all poor people are just lazy, and I don't think that's true. I'd imagine your perspective would change somewhat if you were a deeply in debt middle-aged single mother with 6 children. I'm not saying that people shouldn't have personal responsibility - but I think some people need a helping hand, and that's ok.
